Just how stupid do you think it is to not have a hotel room

Post by C.f.M. » Wed Aug 21, 2013 1:43 pm

I thought I would try something new this year, and not have an Exodus plan (aside from having at least two rides lined up, to get to Reno). Leave Tuesday, head to Reno...stay with or where...you know, fabulous new friends! Maybe meet someone looking to share a room. Meet some people with an extra bed who like the party. I don't fly out until Thursday morning (intentionally, so I'd have some wiggle room to not have a plan)(and avoid the clusterfuck that is the airport on Tues and Wed!)(though maybe Thursday's no better?)

Anyways. This way, I can be spontaneous, right? Go where the playa takes me.

But the self-reliant grown-up in me is kicking in and I'm thinking it might be pretty stupid not to know where I am sleeping Tuesday and Wednesday night. I have always had everything booked and planned and taken care of.

So, eplayans, what say you? Drop the stupid hopeful optimism or go for it?

go where the wind takes you. there should be rooms available. you may have to pay a bit more if you end up walking in to rent a room, but would be worth the adventure!

Personally, it's not something I would do, but I do admire those that have the constitution to let life take them where it will. I'm much more of a planner. So, I guess the answer to your question actually lies within you.

In me is a planner who admires the constitution of slack-ass hippies who think everything will work out in the end because IT NEVER DOES.

LOL sounds like you'll be getting a room.

My partner is one of those people that is comfortable just striking out without any set plan, and I've been known to tag along with him on some of those ventures. In his case, they almost always turn out OK if not great. So please don't let me discourage you from an adventure. Hell, I probably would have never gone to Burning Man without him.

I have to have a room waiting for me in Reno. It's just how I am.

Two years ago there was a terribly long exodus. Some truck jack knifed and backed up the highway for hours. We had a room reserved in Reno for Monday night, but the radio said it was 5 hours to get off the playa and then at least 5 hours to get to Reno, so we sat in a friends shade and made ice cream with the left over LN. We decided to leave camp at about 8pm. We figured if we had to slowly crawl out, it would be best to do it at night. The pulses were running and we took naps as we could. We got into Reno at about 3am ish. Thank G-D I had a room reserved because all of Reno was booked solid by all the burners that got stuck in the traffic. They had a big sign at the check-in - SOLD OUT. RESERVATIONS ONLY.

I stay at the Sands. It's not a 5 star, but I like the parking, Mel's, and there is a starbucks with free wifi in walking distance. The code for $25 a night from Monday to Thursday (Labor day on) is AFTERBURN. For $25 and peace of mind, I'll take it.

I'm getting a room. Of course, there's no fucking way I can be certain of getting into some hippie's house (oooh, janky plywood improvised ramp. I'll take that ride!)
Haven't made my reservation for the sands yet, but after much internal grousing and not doing anything about it, I will go for the company.
Sick of Mel's, oh boy, there's that blt again! but will deal...

But I'm a special case. Maybe if you decide to go for the adventure, you won't need to plan. (Does that make sense? Plan not to plan?)

Oh, don't misunderstand, it's how I am, too! It's just one thing I thought I'd play with, this year (as though camping with total strangers isn't going to be my comfort-stretch for the year!). I try to pick something about myself to do differently each year - seems like each year these opportunities arise but I have things already set, so I have to say no.

Plan not to plan, that's what I'm trying to plan! PLAN ALL THE THINGS!

Means of course, this year, I will end up under a bridge in Reno, trying to hitch a hotel shuttle to the airport Thursday, but WHATEVER! THE PLAYA PROVIDES!!

no it doesn't or I wouldn't be second-guessing myself so bad

to me, id agree with the grown up adult in you that 'plan' is pretty stupid.

what fun is there in being stuck somewhere without a place to be?.. or some place you dont want to be?

it aint exactly like going to the human carcass wash.. in terms of pushing boundaries.. sounds more like undue hassle

plan to leave the burn on a certain date, arrange a hotel for that date and until your flight/ride out of reno happens..

relax..

chill out.. enjoy planning and room service and not being stuck with someone you dont know in a situation you dont like..

Last year a guy that caught a ride with us to Reno on Tuesday called the Sands from the parking lot and made a reservation under the BDC Burners special, walked in & checked in. Tuesday isn't nearly as bad as Monday for exodus, ever (watch this year be different, since I said that). If worst comes to worse, there'll be a ton of burners there, you can probably find someone to crash with. I have a res for Tuesday night, and you could probably crash with us if its booked up. Which it will only be if there's a huge rainstorm & no one can leave. Or the zombie apocalypse.

One night in Retrofrolic's Sands room makes a hard man crumble....!!

Thanks! I will be potentially taking you up on that.

I've only ever stayed at the Sierra (all you can eat sushi = mind blown). It kinda gets on my nerves. This Sands place seems to be where all the cool kids are going!

$30, courtesy of Doc Pyro. Code Burning13. Or just say you want the Barbie Death Camp special.

That's the plan for now, get dropped off at the Sands. Seems like all the cool kids are staying there, and I want to bask in their shadows.

There is a ton of hotel stock in Reno. moore than it needs. You should not have trouble finding a room should you absolutely need it.

There is an App called last minute hotels or something like that.
Essentially you plug in the city and it finds you a cheap room for that night.

Quick google search says its called HotelTonight

My buddies that come down from northern CO use it all the time. They don't know if they'll be capable/want to go home, be too drunk, find a couch, or have to get a hotel. They get really nice rooms for hella cheap.
Why don't ya stick your head in that hole and find out? ~piehole

Giving this a nudge over to the transportation board, since that's a better fit for exodus-plan related questions.
