TRUCKEE, CA – The California Department of Transportation is telling drivers to expect delays this morning on Interstate 80 in Truckee. Caltrans officials say the east and westbound lanes near Donner Pass Road will be closed for an undetermined time period due to a sinkhole in the center median.
Motorists can expect delays heading toward the Sacramento and Bay areas as well as the Lake Tahoe-Reno region. Caltrans and a contractor are at the scene to assess the situation and then perform necessary repairs. There is no estimated time to complete emergency repairs and reopen the closed lanes. Message boards are being activated to provide motorists will the latest information.
The sinkhole developed in the center median around Donner Pass Road during a paving operation early this morning. The sinkhole is estimated to be approximately three feet in diameter and more than eight feet deep. The cause is unknown at this time.
Motorists are urged to use caution in the area.

Wow. Oh, wow. Sinkholes are fascinating and all but that is terrible timing. I guess everyone will have to take 49 or 50?

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.

KOLO Rebecca and the sinkhole on I-80. I'm told it happened around 11:45 last night. CHP tells us Cold Stream Creek use to run where the current freeway is and they believe some drainage may have led to the collapse. I've been told the freeway is safe for travel but one eastbound and one westbound lane will be closed until the hole can be filled.
