Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
Between my luggage, bike, and water, I foresee some issues getting my belongings between the point where the driver can't continue, and where I plan on camping (was looking forward to camping with the CouchBurners until I saw they were charging a $800 fee). There are two other passengers/virgin burners in the car so I told them them I'll post their concerns here then get back to them once someone sheds some light on the issue...
My basic question is will it be hard to find a vehicle that will help load our stuff towards where we will be camping?

Re: Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
After your in the event, you can try asking someone with a truck to help. Usually people are pretty helpful.
The problem will be that the driver wont be able to get you past the gate, and I'm not sure if finding help from there will be possible. Maybe someone else will weigh in here with more info.
Rather than driving in with your tickeless friend, have you thought about paying to go on the Burner Bus? They'll take you and your supplies right in and to a special area reserved for people using that mode of transport.

Re: Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
In all likelihood you'll be able to find somebody who will assist you with transporting your stuff from the vicinity of the gate -- once you're past it -- to wherever you're camped. I'd suggest bringing a cardboard sign with "Burgins need help transporting stuff to camp!", ala a panhandler, and see if you can flag down some help from some people entering who might be able to come back and transport your stuff. You'll probably need to manually haul your stuff away from the gate to a loading zone area to not cause any traffic problems.
I'd suggest you attempt this at night or early morning when it isn't super hot. Be prepared with hats, goggles, dust masks, and water to keep hydrated. It may take some time and effort before you find someone, or just from waiting for them to come back to help you out.
It may also be possible to find someone waiting in line who has some room to spare. Make sure it's clear that you have tickets and all your shit is in order. You should also attempt to negotiate a ride-share with some people in Reno (check out the ride-share board on this forum) and just have them outright transport you, your buddies, and your stuff to wherever you're going.
In all cases, do your generous transport-buddies a favor and do not open/bring any alcoholic containers in the vehicle -- no matter how thirsty you are -- and do not transport any contraband.

Even if I wanted to take the Burner Express, at this point they're sold out. I'm getting a free bike out of the deal from the driver. The only thing that works to my advantage is I currently have no camp affiliation (unlike the other passengers)
I just want to know what to expect and how to best prepare for it.

Well, I'd start preparing by seeking out other avenues before you arrive at the gate. If you're at the gate, be prepared for the environment, and be prepared to -- in the worst case -- haul all your shit manually to wherever you're going. Still, you'll probably find some help for your problem in some form or another.

Why does the driver not have a ticket? How are you going to get back out at the end of the event?
Re: Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
If everyone in the vehicle, whatever the vehicle, does not have a ticket, everyone will be turned back and sent to Reno.nycrollas wrote:Between my luggage, bike, and water, I foresee some issues getting my belongings between the point where the driver can't continue, and where I plan on camping (was looking forward to camping with the CouchBurners until I saw they were charging a $800 fee). I am guessing that you have forgotten that detail after you read the survival guide.
Survival Guide: http://survival.burningman.com/transpor ... hpDQ5K1F2AEveryone in your vehicle must have a ticket in hand when you reach the Gate or your entire car will be turned around. As you approach Black Rock City, tune in to the Gate Area Radio Station 95.1 FM for Gate specific updates (BMIR at 94.5 FM for event info). Traffic is heaviest on Sunday and Monday. If you want to avoid long waits, consider planning your departure from home so you arrive in BRC at a non-peak time, or be prepared to wait and be extra patient.
Greeters is over a mile from Gate. You will not be allowed to unload your stuff and walk. The vehicle will get turned around and sent away. If, at that point, you choose to ignore the instructions of gate, they will be forced to pass you to Law enforcement. Which, at best, will result in Federal Trespassing tickets for everyone in the vehicle (fun huh??).
So, you probably should think this through and figure out a qualified driver that has a ticket.
YMMV.

nycorolla, you have bad information. couchburners charged $200 for last minute joiners. $100 for non last minute. Who told you $800?
Rice, so you are a BMORG employee or GATE commander to state that with confidence? The scare tactic published that this guy will get sent to RENO?! is complete horseshit. How would they know he went back to Reno unless they escorted him? Worst case he goes back to Gerlach. All he has to do is get out right before gate and catch a ride in with someone. Seems pretty easy.

Re: Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
PlayaPatrol: The CouchBurner website shows $800. This thread by Trilobyte states that if anyone in the vehicle is lacking a ticket, the entire car will be sent back. The "back to Reno" shouldn't be taken literally; it just means "back to civilization" as Reno is likely the last major town/city encountered.

Which is why law enforcement in Gerlach watches for people being dropped there, which is not allowed, gets you a ticket, and sent on your way again, or worse. Law enforcement in Gerlach has been dealing with this for years. As have all the communities there South to Fernley.PlayaPatrol wrote:... As a responsible Burner, be nice to our neighbors in Gerlach and other surrounding communities.Eric wrote:There are NO tickets for sale at the Gate- if your vehicle shows up & you are in it without tickets the entire vehicle & everyone in it will be sent back to Reno to drop you off (you can be arrested for loitering if they leave you in Gerlach, Empire, Nixon or Wadsworth) and then have to return to the event without you. If they try to smuggle you in the entire vehicle will have their tickets confiscated & will be refused entry to the event.
If you don't know, please don't speculate. People are coming here and reading things at the last minute and need information that they can rely upon.
In the past, there were private "taxis" that would take people from Reno to BRC, sit in line some distance back from Gate, and try to get someone to take their passenger on through as you must go through Gate by vehicle. The last year I know that worked was 2010. Now that's not allowed as it blocks the Gate line traffic, and BLM responds to fine and evict the vehicle and its occupants.

I have 5 years of Gate & Perimeter experience. First hand knowledge of gate. Sure, I know a bit. I have read the BLM permit. Know the rules. Every burn I dedicate about 1/2 of my day volunteering to ensure that no one gets hurt, everyone who should - gets in, rescuing the clueless and catching the ticketless.PlayaPatrol wrote:nycorolla, you have bad information. couchburners charged $200 for last minute joiners. $100 for non last minute. Looking from the outside, some of the rules do not make sense. In context, with some exposure - they begin to become clear.
I look forward to discussing this with you. (yah, talk - If you like... If not, I am ok with that too.)

The trolls and turds got caught in their lie so don't try to refute it. NO ONE has been bodily forced to go to Reno. Every Eplayan with thousands of posts is a loser turd. And they are very bitter when they are called out on it. Cause they know they have no friends and don't event go to Burning Man!

Most of us have and post photos of ourselves at burning man here and there, if they aren't right in our avatars. Where's yours?
You fit the definition of a troll. You're doing nothing but attempting to stir shit up on an Internet forum anonymously behind a keyboard.
If you were good at it, like some far wittier and clever ones in the past, you'd be great entertainment.
Instead, you're simply the reason the "ignore this user" function exists.

Re: Riding with a driver who doesn't have a ticket to get in
Moderator note, then I'm locking this down before it veers any closer to personal attacks:
Any vehicle arriving at the Gate with an unticketed passenger will be sent back to Reno. The whole vehicle & everyone in it. This doesn't mean someone who needs to get their ticket at Will Call, this means someone without a ticket at all. This has happened, it will happen again. Don't think you'll be the one who gets through.
Any vehicle arriving at the Gate that is found to have a stow-away on board will have the tickets of everyone in the vehicle confiscated, the vehicle itself will be put on a "Do Not Enter" list so it can't come back, even with a different driver, and you'll all be sent back to Reno (don't let this happen to the vehicle that's got your camp's critical infrastructure). Also note that it is extremely dangerous for the stowaway - overheating, dehydration, or worse could happen if there's a delay at the Gate (just think of a stowaway during the 10+ hour Gate closure for the rain...)
