What was the justification for BLM SUVs speeding?
Right about the time the man fell on Saturday, several BLM trucks suddenly lit up and started racing across the crowded open playa at break-neck speeds. I was near the Char-cade (~7:30) and was fully expecting to see someone get run over as they sped towards center camp at 40 or 50 MPH. I assume it was "to serve and protect" someone but I'd be interested to know what heinous crime was going on. I figure in order to justify putting so many innocent people at risk like that, it must have been someone with a flamethrower in center camp .
They did it again about an hour later too, racing up 7:30 out towards G.

A flamethrower would not be justification at BM

I have seen this in past years. Take a photo, record the time and file feedback at Center Camp or the 9-3 stations. If you file it the same day, it will be directly communicated within 24 hours in the daily meetup with LEO. There may be an email address on the main website to the LEAL Team - Law Enforcement and Agency Liaison Team for post event comments. Day of is much more effective. They do not monitor ePlaya.

I'll take your suggestion under advisement. I still have plenty of playa dust in my nose - I don't need any more crap up there.unjonharley wrote:In other words... I suggest you get your nose out of the polices ass crack and have a good burndapete wrote:uh, wut?
I'm glad you had a great burn. I imagine you got a great spot in real close and were able to lose yourself in the positive energy of that crowd celebrating that magnificent pyre. It was certainly the one of, if not THE most spectacular burns ever complete with a perfectly timed showing by mother nature and her wind to complete the scene. Epic.
Unfortunately, I opted to watch a bit further back so my burn was interrupted with sudden harsh lights on all sides followed by coming to terms with the incomprehensible speeds at which those lights were moving. Hell, I can barely navigate out there on my bike during the DAY so I just couldn't see any possible way that those big trucks would be able to move through the burn night crowds. I was absolutely certain I was about to see one of them suddenly stop, having hit and killed someone. Anticipating that inevitable "thud" was enough to bum my burn.
Of course, all my worrying was for not. Nothing bad happened. It turned out THEY WERE POLICES! Those highly trained professionals who NEVER make deadly mistakes. I've since learned that they log thousands of hours in the BLM's new Burning Man High Speed Night Driving Simulator™. I hear if you get to level 10 it's all darktards.
But never mind what actually happened....you should try this fun exercise! Imagine how might your burn have gone if YOU had witnessed someone sitting on the playa get run over by an SUV! Just some young kid, sitting there with her close friends, enjoying the scene one moment - her leg wrapped around the rear axle being dragged for the next 200 feet the next. Would seeing that have taken you out of your moment? Or would you have been able to shrug it off, turn around and say, "those public servants were just doing their jobs."
To be perfectly clear, I am NOT anti-cop. Two of my campmates are officers and they were appalled at the speed those BLM cowboys were racing those trucks up the street in front of our camp. One was spitting mad. "Handing out 'speeding' tickets for 7 MPH but running 50 MPH on B street? They got a lotta damned gall." No, I'm simply trying to find out what was so FUCKING URGENT that they had to use DEADLY FORCE. Because to me, driving vehicles out there that fast on burn night is on par with discharging their weapons.
Oh silly me. I've already forgotten your advice. I'll just forget it and have a good burn.
