Check your trailer's lug nuts!

Post by nixiebunny » Tue Sep 03, 2013 6:33 pm

We were driving home from Black Rock City yesterday when one of our borrowed, ancient tent trailer's wheels fell off. The lug bolts unscrewed themselves over a rough patch of I-40 near Kingman. Fortunately, we were able to drive 30 miles to Wikieup after installing our spare wheel with two lug bolts borrowed from the other wheel, and the "interesting" auto repair shop there had a set of bolts on hand through some strange miracle. The lug bolts on the other wheel were rather loose, about 25 ft-lbs instead of the typical 75 ft-lbs.

So, check those lug nuts or lug bolts on your wheels before taking off again next year.

Had a flat mid week.. Big nail slow leak.. Used the handle of some bolt cutters as helper bar to break the lug nut lose.. Reset the nuts with the same.. Adding a two foot 1/2 inch pipe to the jack kit in the van..

I carry a tubeless tire plug kit and a bike tire pump to deal with leaks caused by nails and screws on the road. Very handy.
