I saw way more insects out there than ever before as well - house flies, moths, assorted winged things. Having a house fly appear in the RV on day 3 was just annoying.Sic Pup wrote:Not exactly animal (neither mineral nor vegetable either) but I saw quite a variety and frequency of different insects this year ranging from spiders, to flies, to moths to other unknown crawlies.

We had dragonflies all week long buzzing around 4/H.
One night my kitty corner neighbors where raver fishing, and they caught a.....K9.
When leaving Sunday morning we saw the same K9 on J about 5:30.

I saw a lot of dragonflies too. And wasps, someone in our area must have hauled a nest in on a trailer. I know we get them up in our trailer frame pretty often. Ick. And flies. WTF was that?
Re: Animals on playa this year
Besides human animals, I saw lots of crows Tuesday morning after the burn. They seemed to be pecking at moopy food bits or something. A few spiders in my own van through out the week, and a dragonfly on or about Friday.
In dust we trust.

Wasps will come from miles away if they catch the right food scent.

, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

Lots of dragonflies, a praying mantis, and moths were buzzing around our camp. Saw a few flies too, as well as some sort of crawling flat insects (not cockroaches, but looked vaguely similar)

Re: Animals on playa this year
this story was relayed to me by a guy at the sands, he camped with a fellow who brought a kitten to the burn. the kitten was so young, its eyes weren't even open, and they had to feed it via eye dropper. apparently one of their hitch hikers wasn't paying attention and fed the kitty out of a pee jug. kit died the next day.

I hope the hippie didn't let it to go to waste and finished the jug between himself and the guy that brought the kitten.

Cool observation! On the offhand chance anyone is still following this ancient thread...
I've started a project to document non-human life in BRC (www.inaturalist.org/places/black-rock-city-nv-us). I've added this photo, along with your comments and a link-back. If you'd rather do it yourself, let me know and I'll delete my version. Thanks!

MyLarry helped trap a young possum which had hitchhiked in on a truck from Texas. It had survived all week and was discovered during tear down. They planned to take it back to TX and turn it loose.

This was my virgin year, so I'm not sure what the norm is out there, but I saw a lot of pets that people snuck in. A lady camping across the street from me had a cat walking around camp all week, out on the open playa I ran into a guy with a little yorkie in his bike basket, and I repeatedly saw a man riding his bike with a dog (on leash) running along side him. Oh and I saw another cat when I was out riding around the city (can't remember where I was though)

Pets are not permitted. (Nore are plants.) There is an exception for service animals, and the set-up crew that are out there getting things ready months before the event starts.

That's a pretty harsh environment out there. I wouldn't take my little buddy there even if he was allowed.
