Canned Food
So I went shopping yesterday for food. Some pastas, canned beans, chili, crackers, peanut butter and other stuff. I'm flying out of Miami so I'm thinking of ways to cut down weight.
My question is can I open these canned beans and chilli and store them in zip locks into my luggage. I have a cooler as well should I put them in there or are they okay in the main luggage?

Re: Canned Food
Sounds like a lot of extra weight! I definitely would have purchased food after flying in.
For what you've got now, I wouldn't open the cans; they are hermetically sealed, far more airtight than just a plastic bag. This will keep the food from spoiling far better - remember the heat! Also, plastic bags full of food sounds like a huuuge mess waiting to happen, given the way airlines handle luggage. If you're dead-set on the bag idea, one option to try and prevent mess might be to freeze everything before packing, but I don't know if that will last the whole flight MIA->RNO.

Re: Canned Food
Put that food in your cabinets... Buy food in Reno or even SF... Or whatever city you fly into. Putting ziplock beans in your maleta will mean you may wear ziplock beans on the playa.

Re: Canned Food
Not a lot actually. Just enough to fill up the rest of the bags but like everyone has told me just get it at Reno.
I guess I was worried Reno would be scarce by the time I arrive.

the only thing that might be hard to find in Reno is a bike.. the rest ( food, water, camping gear etc ) is all good.

This is the cutest post ever! Congrats to you, STB, for being so prepped and self-sufficient. Love the logic of plastic bags to reduce bulk. On the other hand, canned food is heavy and, uh, readily available everywhere. Take a few deep, deep breaths and relax.
And make sure you've packed the can opener.

Re: Canned Food
Question: Is it prudent to bring lots of canned food to the playa? I wonder how big of a pain it is to leave no trace with that since you can't easily break them down. Oh! Also, is glass STRICTLY prohibited in BRC? I was at BevMo shopping for gifting but 90% of all bottles are glass.
Thanks!

Re: Canned Food
i asked about glass bottles , and they said you could have them . Many of the booze that is brougt in is in glass . Its how responseable you are with it that counts.
im bring beer in bottles and will have a full box of emptys on my way out.

Re: Canned Food
gus, are you likely to eat canned food if you are out of reach of a grocery store for a week? People have different food approaches on the playa, and that's one of the questions you can ask yourself to figure out what works for you.gus wrote:Question: Is it prudent to bring lots of canned food to the playa? As for bringing glass--drink over some sort of ground cover, don't wander around BRC with it, pour it into someone's cup, rather than giving them the whole bottle so they can go and break it. Any broken glass not picked up by the person or camp who dropped it, is picked up by Department of Public Works personnel, who are out on their hands and knees in the hot sun, picking up splinter by splinter, to cover your mangy ass. Chose accordingly.
(And seriously, we all know that canned food wont keep any better than fresh food once you've opened the cans? Or are we being trolled?)

Re: Canned Food
You have to pack your garbage out anyway. Clean the can, crunch it, put it in something, take it out of the playa, and recycle or toss at home.

No, you are right. I somehow missed saying that, perhaps because it was said upthread. Clarity over brevity, especially in late august...
They are still recyclable, and I'd like to encourage that, rather than saying trash them.

Re: Canned Food
This has to be a joke!? First off, I don't think you can take canned goods on a airplane, period. They might exploded! Contrary to what people have told you, Reno is a modern city that got canned goods a few years ago. There will be plenty of places to get canned goods! Make sure to get a can opener.
I think eating canned goods on the Playa is a good idea. Seriously, you just open up a can of soup and stick a spoon in it and you are off! Thrown in a little bread and you are all set. No mess, no fuss and carrying out the empty can is easy!

Re: Canned Food
Actually its possible to take canned foods on an airplane no worries. I've seen hispanics leaving out of MIA to Cuba or South America with 1-3 oversized bags full of canned food, poultry, and the occasional engine of a vehicle <--- NO LIE.
This happens every week.

I hope you found one of the walmarts in reno...........I can't even begin to imagine the bowel problems you would experience eating ROTTEN canned food in a bag. Let us know how it went. I can say that I made it through no problem. Surviving on canned food was pretty fun and actually tasty.
Thanks everyone for the tips. This first year has been a learning experience.

Not all. I stuffed some cans because I still had extra space and weight to play with.
So for everyones knowledge Canned Food DOES NOT explode at 30,000 ft.
