Is Astroturf moopy?

Post by FireTommy » Mon Sep 16, 2013 8:35 pm

I want to put it under my sleeping structure if it isn't. If I cut the stuff at home how much plastic might come off?

I have no experience with it, but Id think that if after cutting it you ran a soldering iron or something along the edge to reseal it, it would do fine.

Cut a piece and spray it with a pressure washer and see if anything comes off.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

The consensus on the board has been yes, when the topic was previously broached.

MOOPy.
Even if you treat the edges, the heat and dry dustiness cause those lil green f**kers to let loose all over the place.
A canvas drop, or a (finished) carpet works well.

A canvas cloth sounds really good. I'd rather not chase fake blades of grass all over the place. Thanks!

Something about having astro-turf just makes things look funny though... Maybe you could use a print to make it look like grass.

Look for the rugs made from recycled pop bottles. They are soft, non-MOOPy, clean up easily, and sometimes are available in green. We have three now, one for under each tent. Softer than you'd imagine. We found ours at Costco and Lowe's.

We had issues with astroturf flaking off (breaking off?) and mooping up the playa - which took a lot of effort to pick out ...

Avoid the stuff if you can. It's a hassle on its best day, and incredibly MOOPy in most cases. Take a look at your local big box hardware joint, you should be able to find good sized pieces of really thin carpet that will work for your purposes. Inexpensive, lightweight, finished edges, and does the job for dust abatement. We've got a couple pieces we use around our camp - one for outside the shower stall for a little changing room space, another for the common area in the camp so people can sit and lounge with less dust kicking up, and one outside our van (despite building ridiculously awesome shade structures, my gf and I camp in our cargo van), so we have a place to put on/take off shoes and whatnot. I highly recommend it.
