Disco Duck MV
We were up the street from this resurrected MV.
According to the operator, it took a hired crew of 6 with some pretty serious heavy machinery to TOW it out on the playa, full of private party campmates.
We watched it go out several times, and it was always towed.
According to other MV operators I know/asked personally, this shouldn't have been allowed ...
Please discuss.

Re: Disco Duck MV
last time the disco duck was at BM it was rumored to be a VIP type MV, doesn't surprise me the rumors persist.
Are they just rumor, or the truth, who knows..
But as for it being a trailer now, sounds lame.

Saw it a few times. I just figured it was stationary art
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

There was so much of this VIP bullshit in BRC this year. Sad, but I'm sure this type of default world exclusivity will only grow at the event.

Re: Disco Duck MV
If I already didn't have a killer concept for my own MV that I'm creating I'd build a big VIP room, with velvet ropes and bouncers with clipboards...
The duck is an impressive work of art though, regardless of how douchey the owners/operators may be...

Re: Disco Duck MV
Set up the velvet ropes and bouncers right at Greeters. I'd say $400 for a ticket makes everyone a VIP already.

I was able to get on the duck with several friends while they were DJ'ing out on the playa. It definitely was stationary and never moved. That said, they let us go anywhere on the car we wanted. We climbed all over it, stood by the DJ, got up on the little dance pole platforms, and etc. Never once did I get a "VIP Art Car" vibe from anyone on board. That was just my own experience with the car I thought I'd share.

Welcome to eplaya - always glad to have more gingers, and more surprises, too. Thanks for your story. I'm disappointed at how I was already forming a poor opinion of the MV, without ever having approached His Duckiness.

Re: Disco Duck MV
One morning around sunrise I was walking past the Disco Duck and I saw what appeared to be bouncers. There were a couple big men with walkie talkies standing on the ground around the duck. I assumed since there were goons that I wasn't invited to this particular party. We kept on walking back to camp speculating who could be so important that they needed hired security

Write dmv(at)burningman(dot)com if you have concerns about violations. Be sure to talk about that which you witnessed yourself, as it only takes one busy, incorrect gossip hub to misinform tons of people.

performance art:
velvet ropes, around a D.J. (or boombox), bouncers, and not let anyone in....empty space within.

I like it. If the velvet ropes are rather expansive, that might be amusing.
Occasionally one person should be allowed in--all alone. Maybe they dance ballet and it's weirdly poignant, maybe they dance their own style, maybe they stand there looking forlorn. Never more than one person!
If people wanna make friends outside and BYOB, that would be cool.

bouncers, maybe a bar inside, with a beautiful bartender(ess), waiting to serve a guest.......as you say, one is let in? (a shill, of course), who fritters around, has a drink, asks for another and is kicked out for being "pushy"...........while drinks and such are served outside.

Yes! . . . Maybe sometimes it should be a shill when there is a point to be made, or something funny to do, and sometimes a real clubgoer, as an experiment.
And yeah--drinks. The real community is formed outside.

The key things I read from that is they appeared to be bouncers and you assumed they were goons and you were uninvited.[t]ODD wrote:One morning around sunrise I was walking past the Disco Duck and I saw what appeared to be bouncers. I also wonder how public it necessarily has to be, if it's a stationary piece.
I wouldn't go complaining about the Duck or whatever else that did you no harm.

If they were trying to move it, the guys with the walkie talkies could have been the necessary escort to prevent idiots from climbing while moving...

Sooner or later someone verify/nullify these "VIP" MV's with a GoPro.

Re: Disco Duck MV
My camp brought a 20-30 person MV for the first time this year. We found out rather quickly that you actually do have to have some sort of "door man". People would come running from out of nowhere and hang on it, or hurdling over the side gate then crashing into everyone. We would accommodate when we had room and YOU ASKED FIRST. A couple of gate jumpers that got sassy were removed by their throat.theCryptofishist wrote:If they were trying to move it, the guys with the walkie talkies could have been the necessary escort to prevent idiots from climbing while moving...
I was amazed at how many people would just jump on without as much as a nod, then they want to climb, stand and swing on everything. If you were to stop at the man for a few minutes, you'd come back to 40 people you don't know lounging about and asking if you know who's car this is. I don't think I've ever even leaned against an MV without getting a nod from someone on-board.
I'm sure this type of behavior is fairly typical for most larger MVs. Some MVs are kinda fragile, others are made of steel and sharp stuff so the knuckle heads can't really fuck them up.

It's that blurry area where you make it as attractive and inviting as possible, but it's also your private property that you don't want people to damage. It's a shiny beacon of awesomeness sitting out there in the middle of a party and you have to convince drunk people to get the hell off the thing that you made specifically to attract their attention. And then you have to feel responsible for the safety of people who have already been told that they risk death by being at this event.

Yep, that's pretty much how it went. " Stop the MV, dude's on the back trying to hang on to the generator cage... AGAIN"

I just wrote a big long rant about this shit... then I decided not to bore everyone with it and just say that Jackass is doing a pretty good job of describing what it's like trying to operate an MV within the rules of conduct and deal with the other, regular jackasses.

Re: Disco Duck MV
I picked up some riders Thursday night and they climbed up on top and started trying to rock the car back and forth. It looked like it was about to just tip over. You absolutely have to have bouncers on each floor and each point of entry. I could not believe the entitled attitude of some kids. We also had a group of deleted virgins jump on that got a full on tour of the best of the back road bars and hidden gems of Burningman. Good attitudes and manners get all kinds of rewards.
A camp mate kept telling me I was too nice to drive a car. She was probably right.

I don't like driving in BRC, and I only have to deal with peds and cyclist. Although there was one idiot who wanted me to tow her on her roller skates, now that I think about it. I was so quick to say No! that I didn't have the chance to ask her about her death wish.
