Given the overlap btw eplaya and BDC, this shouldn't be too hard to pull off for the BDC greeter shift. The hardest part is keeping Doc from picking off the choice bits of meat.

Lonesomebri wrote:I rode out to the gate one day back a few years, turns out it must have been Wednesday, but, yeah, watching the new arrivals greeted by and then hug a naked person... That is great. Very very very cool. Loved watching it. A Jackass buddy I know convinced me that the newbs rolling in dust at the gate wasn't as annoying as I thought, it just gets alot of the reservations, apprehensions, and fake boundaries out of the way real fast. Gets the party started. As with the pulling up with the family in the RV, the naked Greet let's 'em know.
It really does. I was petrified before my first Burn in a way that I cannot properly articulate, except to say that I cried on the way to my rideshare drop-off. When I finally met the Greeters, I realized that Burners were my kinda people, & everything was going to be okay.

I am obviously a bit protective of Greeters, having done it before and being an insufferable Greety person by nature, but they really do have a function, if primarily for new people. And trust me--Gate does not want to hand out the W/W/W, or tell people which side of the city is the quieter side, or where Playa Info is, or any of that. That would make the Gate line even longer.
Anyway, if I rolled to the gate and was greeted by Savannah, well, I think that would cause me to totally solidify my support for the Greeters.
Thank you, Bri--it was such a treat meeting you this year. You are wickedly funny. :D

Greeters...........ah the volumes.

well they do serve a good and needed purpose, I know, cause I was told so.
and yeah, Gate does not want to hand stuff out and give directions, except to suggest "auto fornication" if you ask dumb stuff.

The question here, Savannah, is, were you costumed, or not, when greeting?

Of course I was! I was a Pirate one year, Satan the following year (had an embroidered name patch and everything) . . .

Satan doled out spankings with a yardstick, as the Dark Lord Mephistopheles is apparently wont to do. Hell and parochial school have many similarities. I didn't realize until months later that Greeters does NOT officially sanction spanking any longer. Whoops!

(Fortunately, I never offered--I waited to be asked.)

You guys do understand that greeter's gate is a blm requirment, yah?

Good idea to ask how many times someone has attended and tailor information to that.
It can be quick.

I make new people pass a test to enter.

Clearly you haven't been greeted by me yet.

Yeah, lawyer talk for attempting to inform people of the rules for the potties, without which the burn has a half life in hours.
And a few other sundries like the speed limit, etc.

I actually intended to rush people through, and tried to.
It became clear that people wanted a show for the virgins.
Sometimes I even fool the veterans at first.
I sort of morphed the quick info, get em through thing into qualifying people to enter.
I make them answer questions or get sent back to reno.

Veterans, I get in quickly, after the obligatory "Holy shit, you've been coming twenty years!" thing.

It was actually what I was most looking forward to this year.

Next year.

Not that elite anyhow.
I did a 12 hour shift once.
It's addictive.

To be fully honest, a more traditional greeter/raver told me I am not 'perky' enough.

I would so like a minimum greet lane!!! I was advised not to put anything negative here, so I'll be good.

You can be negative here, provided you're not name-calling, spamming, asking for advice on doing something illegal, and don't mind arguing.

A more visible lane for this seems like a good idea overall.

Savannah,

Thanks, but since I've never been a greeter, I'll just leave it be.

Very, very few people said no to the hug.
YOU WERE FUCKING TERRIFIC VC ON POOP PATROL! What a gift you gave of yourself at Greeters Station!
You were so loaded for bear after going on shift with me. I so appreciate you getting in the Poop Mobile just before greeter shift!
And after seeing you at the M&G it was secured: YOU are a fucking rock star out there. I so want you in my car again!
That means a lot to me Robbi. I always worry that I'm fitting in, or trying desperately not to screw up. This year I became a little less cautious.

BTW, I'm always up for another shift.

Took us four hours after arriving Friday around 5pm :( They had four lanes on the left merging into one, which turned into a serious mess pretty quickly. After driving 12 hours behind the wheel of a 45'er with a stick shift  Unlucky I think, and the only real crime was delaying our much anticipated after-drive beers.

Or you could show up on Wednesday pre event. The gate people were still handing out the Books and information. Went straight to my camp and got hit by a 4 hour windstorm. But still there should be a couple of lanes dedicated to those who wish to skip the greeters and want to go straight to their camps.

To be fair . . . that's Gate, not Greeters.

Although a pokey Greeter (if you had one) after 4 hours in the Gate line isn't fun.

Anyone that volunteers no matter where is what one of the parts burning man is made of but out of curiosity and yes I've looked through the burning man site. Is stopping at greeters mandatory. Yes I know that from gate road they funnel you to greeters and anyone driving off gate/greeters road quickly gets the attention of perimeter and the BLM and that greeters gives a lot of vital info but is this mandatory? Can burners who have been to the event many times just wave at the greeters and be on their way? Those who have or are current greeters you all do a great job for those who wish to stop or are virgins to burning man.
