Can anyone tell me what this art car is called, and where I can find more music like this?

I'm not trying to be funny here. When I found this car on Saturday right after the Burn, I thought the bass sounded groovier and sexier than any of the other "untz-untz" I'd heard on the playa. Seriously! (Listen to the clip with some good headphones.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hmm, not sure what art car that is, and honestly that clip isn't super useful. That could be a segment in all kinds of EDM, from house to electro. Need to hear more to really help you out substantially.

Thats the Wide Awake Art Car to my knowledge. I found them on Wednesday night in the middle of deep playa and thought I was in some crazy dream. Definitely one of my favorites. You can usually find them at most of the Wonderland events as I believe it was created by people involved with Insomniac. From what I understand it had a big upgrade for the Burn this year from other times I've seen it out and about.

This year I've heard and appreciated music styles that I've never heard before. I kept asking the young 'uns in my camp what these styles were called. Maybe there is hope that I can broaden my mind!

That is the Insomniac Wide Awake art car, built by the guys who do things like EDC and such. They have another car, they brought it last year, but it looks like it might have been absent this year (it's a giant flowermobile). This thing is designed awesomely, and despite the impression one might get from hearing "Guys who do EDC build a rave car and bring it to the dust," the dudes driving it are amazingly friendly and, by all accounts, love giving rides to anyone and everyone, no matter what their body type or attractiveness-level is.

This is a totally personal opinion/story - I find it funny that the car seemed to try to park near other giant art car parties, because it never seemed to have a big crowd. Later on in the week I saw it parked directly next to one of the bigger art cars out there, facing the opposite direction, playing different music. I just don't get the point of that... why drive up to another art car throwing a party and try to throw one less than fifty feet away? It did that for one or two nights before giving up and just hooking up with another large car on Saturday(?) night... which, again, I found kind of funny, because their sound was nowhere near as good as the main car, so there weren't many people near the Wide Awake car... and then it tried to throw it's own party, again, sunday evening after the temple burn, maybe twenty feet away, facing nearly the same direction, from the other car... Caused a weird sound. Hell, you can even see in the background, the Robot Heart is somewhere very closeby given the giant floating emblem in the background. Why park that close to another giant party barge?!

I just don't get the motivation behind parking your giant party barge directly next to another party barge. Nothing against the party barges, sparkleponies or not, I know it's a crazy amount of work and money to get these big sound cars out there and have them survive for the week... some guy working the Robot Heart one day (I found their camp on accident) gave me a quick tour as to how much maintenance these big busses need every day to survive out there (A LOT!), it's crazy... but... why go through all that work just to park next to someone else and have shitty sound on both ends? Unless there's a deep playa sound policy I am unaware of, where big art car parties must be confined to certain areas on each night to prevent massive amounts of MOOP from building up? One rumor I heard - The Robot Heart shut down somewhat early one day due to MOOP issues from attendees, and someone got on the microphone to complain about it before the Heart drove off... Who knows.

Personally, I really love the deep playa art car parties... I might stop in for a little bit and pass on, but there's just something so mysterious about riding along in the deep desert and hearing random noises and sounds... and then finding a big light that appears to be very loud... and then coming across a gigantic party smack dab in the middle of nowhere on the moon.... and then you ride off and find a parking meter in the middle of nowhere.

But, I digress. This is a big rambling post. The Wide Awake car mostly stuck to Electro House/Breakbeats, and later in the week seemed to take on a much more tech house/deep house sound. Electro House is the zappier/harder/faster stuff, in general, and the tech/deep stuff is slower, more repetitive, but not as predictable, if that makes sense. Breakbeats don't have a constant BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM 4/4 beat, and if it's not Dubstep, it's probably Breakbeats, speaking generally. If you're looking for more, I'd recommend just perusing soundcloud or something for mixes tagged as tech/deep.

edit: In my biased opinion, look up the Robot Heart soundcloud. They record the majority of their sets at incredible quality, and the stuff played on their bus managed to always be... fantastic, in my book. And they always land in the deep/tech category! It will be slower beats per minute (BPM) than that video, though.

It's an excellent way to quickly understand the difference between the bazillion varieties of EDM (it breaks it down into 16 or so genres, which still means a bunch aren't listed or are munged together.)

I'm no expert. But I'm thinking a handheld laser passing over your eye during an arc isn't gonna permanently damage you. I would think it'd have to be a sustained beam for a few seconds.

See this photograph? It's not a scorch mark, but blood at the back of someone's eye caused by damage from a 1W handheld laser -- almost exactly like the one you see in the video. The time of exposure was probably 0.25 seconds, caused by the handheld laser rolling off its mount and falling to the floor as the owner made a grab for it. During the fall the beam struck the victim's eye. He's very lucky it didn't directly hit the fovea, where it could've wrecked his central vision and color-detecting cones.



Now this hit was at close range. However, even at the distances shown in the video, the beam is still significantly dangerous. These lasers are usually at least 1W in power -- 200x the eye-safe limit. The guy who got hit above was lucky enough to be able to see a doctor relatively quickly. It cost him about $1000 to go to the ER, only for them to refer him to a specialist because they couldn't do anything about it. He needed surgery to repair the damage, and drugs to delay healing and scarring that could possibly permanently ruin his eyesight. You wouldn't have the same luxury at Burning Man unless you got helicoptered out to a real hospital.

These Class 4 lasers are also considered fire hazards. It's what makes them Class 4 rather than Class 3b, the latter of which is "just" an eye hazard. While you're probably not going to see the city going up in flames because of these lasers, they do present ignition hazards in the same way as fireworks, fire barrels, or other regulated stuff people bring to the Playa. I'm less concerned about that and more about peoples' vision.

Could goggles be used to prevent this damage from happening? Could clear goggles be treated with a coating or some kind, or does it need to be a smoky lens?

I'm in the same boat with bbadger on this. People simply do not realize the potential danger of lasers. I draw my Safety Third line at misuse of powerful ones at eye level. Stupid and careless.


Back to the original topic, "Where can I find more music like THIS?", you might want to check out a few different software programs and *make your own*! Do a little bit of checking and you can find several different ones, some reasonably priced, some pricey. But once you get the hang of it, you can really tap into some creative neurons and make some amazing stuff. Just my two cents.

You need special goggles that block that specific wavelength, and you can't find goggles that block all wavelengths unless you want solid metal. Clear goggles can block CO2 lasers as they produce just heat, but you need specific filters for visible wavelengths -- like special yellow filtered goggles to block blue, orange for green and blue, cyan for red, etc. Even then they have to be strong enough to protect you. I've tested yellow safety (impact) goggles you can buy at Amazon, but they allow too much through (though they may work at greater distances). Laser-certified goggles cost about $90+ each; the YLW (yellow) filter goggles that are made for such wavelengths cost me about $130; uncertified, but tested-by-others goggles run about $30-40. In the end you probably won't use them unless you think they look cool (and they do in some ways) because they will color your vision, and the lasers are usually used at night so it'll be hard to see.

Sunglasses can actually be worse for you than no goggles, as they won't protect you against laser light, and they'll reduce the ambient light you see so your pupils will be dilated, presenting a larger target for the beam to hit. Welding goggles are also not generally strong enough to block laser light.

The best thing is to just not get hit by lasers in the first place unless they've been measured-safe at those distances.

For these kinds of shows, the lasers as set up by professional laser show operators. In order to ensure that there are no liability problems, these laser show operators ensure that their lasers are either 1) completely out of reach (3m above peoples heads is usually the standard), or 2) the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) measured for all locations that the laser directly interacts with people falls below Class 1 laser standards (i.e. usually 0.5-1mW or less).

The latter takes quite a bit time and measurement. For lasers that are not eye-safe at aperture (the opening), they can be made safe if they move fast enough, or spread out enough to not be an eye hazard. However, the operator needs to ensure that the laser cannot get stuck in a position due to mechanical problems, or that if there are mechanical problems, the lasers will shut off.

The work and liability of ensuring that laser shows work right is one reason why audience scanning is not as popular in the US as in Europe. Usually only large venues will have the resources to ensure that MPE levels are maintained for audience scanning. Supposedly, the people at the Laser Genome project this year were fully compliant with their laser safety measures, including FAA variances. The group that did One-Mile-Clock in 2011 may not have been up to those standards, but they did take measures to ensure that the beam intensity at points it intersected on the playa (e.g. the temple) were low power enough that reflections from stuff, like the crystals, would not blind people (they also ensured that beams would terminate on hills).

In many ways I like that Burning Man is "lawless" with respect to lasers, at least on art and safely installed. It means we get to see lasers used in ways that usually can't be seen because of liability issues. However, I get really wary of handheld lasers or stuff like that where people just aren't aware that they could blind someone with their toy.
