"Entire countries have banned the use of sky lanterns, including Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Spain and Germany. In the USA, bans include Illinois, New Hampshire, California, Minnesota, South Carolina, Hawaii, Utah, Tennessee, and Virginia. Other states including Kansas and Missouri and the New York Division of Fire Prevention and Control are also looking into adopting changes to fire codes to regulate the use of sky lanterns.

According to Jack Rabit Speaks from a year ago, Burning Man bans their use as well. Obviously, someone didn't get the memo. Though with all the LEOs out there this year, I'm surprised nobody got a ticket for using them,

Almost as though Mr. London seeks out the worst offenders, albeit pretty offenders, because he KNOWS his photo will then garner attention and draw views to his work. Now, I do not know if this is the case, but it surely is a dick move, if true.

I worked Perimeter patrol the morning after a number of these things were launched, and we picked up a bunch of them outside the trash fence. So we can add littering to the charges.

Don't know about anyone, but my patrol did not take photos. We were a bit busy and just stuffed them in the back seat until we had to rush off somewhere else. We probably picked up a dozen, but there were obviously more.

From late 1944 until early 1945, the Japanese launched over 9,300 of these fire balloons, of which 300 were found or observed in the U.S. Despite the high hopes of their designers, the balloons were ineffective as weapons: causing only six deaths (from one single incident) and a small amount of damage.
Similar, but cruder, balloons were also used by Britain to attack Germany between 1942 and 1944.

When I saw this pic, weeks or whenever it was ago, my first thought was the practical...but what about all those tents and the clear MOOP issue? Quickly followed up by the...damn hippie (hipster right? no dreads

), smiling through it all.

It has an artistic quality, which is why the photographer presented it...but completely agreed on all realistic points...WTF?

Everyone has a little pyro in them, it can not be helped...we are all cavewomen and cavemen at the core...find the food, eat the food, find a mate, mate the mate, and play with fire...some could argue it is in our DNA...but so is a rather large brain...

So I also question the end result of the photo...was the photographer documenting a potential tragic moment with the eye of a sardonic artist or was he just being a self serving jack off, nothing more than BM paparazzi?

Sigh...with this photo in such popular circulation, perhaps something good will come of it...an awareness of the situation and a more educated/vigilant burner core...looking out for each other in and off the playa...and maybe, just maybe a few hippies will get their skanky asses handed to them before they threaten the community as a whole with their happy flying fire.

Considering the fire hazard these things present in general, in such a dry area, anyone caught launching one of these hazards should be brought up on the same felony charges as anyone causing wildfires due to illegal campfires or fireworks (i.e. reckless burning). I'd love to see those BLM cops at the event jumping these criminal morons and hauling their dumb asses away instead of wasting time inspecting bags every time someone pulling out a chapstick.
