Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
To be fair, I don't think there had ever been much attention drawn to the land on and beyond the street. While the Playa Restoration team has always had to do the work, they've never marked and colored the space on the published MOOP Map (just as the space on the other side of the street from the big sound camps had not been published prior to 2011).

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013

I keep trying to figure out who was on the frontage on K between 3 and 3:15. I don't remember a camp being there - especially one that could create that type of swath.
I'm going to email my neighbors to see if they have any recollection. Based on some of the stories, it could've been opportunistic moopers. We'll probably never know.
That red is just too close to home.

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
I am really not surprised to see a full-yellow Esplanade, after walking & biking it. This year was particlarly bad for soft spots and sink holes and in some parts it was dangerous to try to cross on foot, much less stoop for MOOP, geez, you were taking your life in your hands!
It was really hard for folks to keep control of their bikes and being a human obstacle was not fun. I did much less MOOPing on Esplanade this year as a result, sorry.

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
I'm glad they're reporting a color for Esplanade, as hopefully it will be just another way to encourage people to be more aware of MOOP and more willing to pick it up as they travel.
I also like the idea that came up in one of the comments about reporting the total MOOP, city-wide. I think it would be cool to collectively get that number of trash barrels down and really cement the communal effort of LNT.

Sad to see Ranger HQ get Green-Yellow, and First Camp get super secret DOUBLE YELLOW.

ABSOLUTELY.
We're going to need a piece of technology that's somewhere in between a Baby Bjorn, and that Dr. Theopolis thing that Twiki would wear around on Buck Rogers.

Black Rock Beacon, green again.
And I was in charge of LNT. Makes me very pleased with my camp and campmates. The credit goes to them.

We were camped right by there. Pretty sure that's right around where massive gathering of super deluxe RV's (with a tow generator or two) popped up. We kept calling it millionaire's row all week.48_love wrote:

Man, talk about leaving us hanging....
"All Com DPW: Due to the unforeseen government shutdown, the BLM Site Inspection for tomorrow has been canceled and postponed indefinitely."
The Hun is dealing with some technical issues, but I imagine that a MOOP Map Live blog post is forthcoming. I'm getting word that the Playa Restoration team has left the playa, victorious in their LNT efforts. Stay tuned for further information.

I had a feeling this would happen. Too bad the shut down didn't occur during the event and the BLM officers would have had to go home! LOL Of course I am sure the county LEO's would have stuck around and maybe that would have been worse?

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
Heaven forbid. They might have tossed us all off the Playa on the spot.
Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
Crap. I didn't even consider that as a possibility. But I guess it is. I read an article today about all the people being forced to leave Yosemite. Crazy.Elliot wrote:Heaven forbid. They might have tossed us all off the Playa on the spot.

"Your public lands are now closed to you the public."
I don't know if they could legally enforce that, since they would not be on duty. But they would surely leave that to the lawyers, for later. (Realistically, I would expect there are provisions for officers to remain on duty until the public has been removed from their public lands.)
(While we are waiting for more MOOP-related news.... (Otherwise this would belong in the Politics section.) )
Seems to me, for Congress to fail to pass a budget by the prescribed date constitutes abdication. All members of the 113th United States Congress are now unemployed, and we the people need to call the First 21st-Century Congress to form a new nation on the soil formerly known as the United States of America.

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
Yeah, the event would have been shut down with a 24 or 48 hours to vacate notice, and likely no rain checks or refunds of any kind.
Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
And then, I expect, from the following year on, the event would be held on private land.

"Remember, remember, the fourth of October..."
Dunno. It just doesn't have the same ring to it IMHO. Maybe we can postpone it to the 5th of November for aesthetic reasons?

Re: MOOP Map Live 2013
While we're in shutdown limbo, I'll post this pertinent bit from this week's Jack Rabbit Speaks newsletter...
That's good stuff. This (the MOOP Map) is intended as a positive feedback tool. If your camp did well, great! If not, you've now identified an area where there's room for improvement next year. The Hun's post has great info, and so do these boards. Whether you're already thinking about what you and your campmates will be doing in 2014, or you'll be starting things back up in a few months, there is still plenty of time to plan for next year's burn.OMG MY CAMP IS *RED* ON THE MOOP MAP!! I'M FREAKING OUT!!
It happens every year. The Playa Restoration Team publishes the annual MOOP Map and people whose camps are Yellow (bad) or Red (way bad) freak the f*ck OUT. They'll abjectly panic, gnashing teeth, rending garments, flailing on the ground, speaking in tongues -- you get the idea.
We're here to tell you, it's OK. We still love you ... we really do. Nobody's going to blackball you from the playa (unless you're like really *really* REALLY bad on a consistent basis). All we (and your fellow participants) ask is that you learn from your mistakes, and do it better next time. Strive for Green!
To that end, here are some tips from participants who are doin' it right about how to make that happen ... it all starts with designating a dedicated LNT Czar for your camp to plan ahead - check out this entry from The Hun for tips on how to get green.
