New to Melbourne...
Hey y'all - burner here and I just moved from the states to Australia, specificity Melbourne, and feeling kind of like a fish out of water. Is it the dreads? The town? I've heard such good things... Any advice an Aussie could give me when traveling your cities that would be awesome. Thank you so much!

Re: New to Melbourne...
Thanks! Any words of advice to a fellow burner? It seems like a great city... Still looking for work and adventure here. Did you have a fantastic burn (if you went?)
Re: New to Melbourne...
I'm not in Australia.
Just thought it needed to be said.
You should find a lot of burners and interesting people there.
And I understand Melbourne is the serial killer capital of Australia, so there's that.
I like the name.

Re: New to Melbourne...
I would like to recommend the film Dead End Drive-In.
Somewhat burneyesque.
Wish I was there now.

Thanks for the sweet reply! I'll check that movie out, and watch my back. I'm hoping to make it out to the burn next year after all...

Hi there welcome to Melbourne - I am in Melbourne.
Tokyo Sex Whale - reminds me of Bristol in the 90s!
There is plenty to do and it will get warmer soon. There is a local burning man community (on FB but plenty more than that)

Re: New to Melbourne...
I'm giving this a nudge over to the Regionals & Events board, since that's a better fit for burners trying to connect with others in their region. Good luck, and check out the regional network to find out about other events and meetups that may go on in your neck of the woods.
Re: New to Melbourne...
i moved from the states to melbs a couple of years ago - what worked for me: (by the way, i'm female, so YMMV depending...)
i lived in north melb - there's a bar/pub on nearly every corner (seriously, north melb had the highest concentration of pubs in melbs) - go by yourself. sit at the bar. talk to the people next to you, the bartenders, the wait staff. go back again. sit at the bar. talk to the people next to you, the bartenders, the wait staff. play pool - ask someone to teach you since the rules are a bit different (and whatever you do, don't let your opponent knock all their balls in before you hit in 1 of yours - you have to walk around the table in your undies!). learn aussie rules footy (if that interests you, or rugby, or cricket).
can't remember the name of the music venues on st. kilda (but i think there are two of them) - they are smaller joints. go by yourself.
i swear the biggest diff between melb and the states is how easy it is to talk to people when you go somewhere alone. maybe its the difference in accents, maybe its just coopers red, i don't know.
cheers mate!

Welcome to Melbourne!
I moved here from the UK last year, having not even visited it on holiday before. It's a fantastic city with loads going on - happy to offer any info/advice you'd like. I also went to the burn for the first time this year along with a few eplaya regulars - turtleburp (above), bumble and international incident.

Thank you ALL for such wonderful advice and well-wishing. I don't have the Facebook but I guess it might be worth signing up. If anyone wants to get beers some evening at one of your favorite local pubs or bars, I'll buy you a round. Thanks again!

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

So I guess when I treys to email you it went to my self... Still figuring things out! I have Sunday night through forever off as I am not just looking for work. Let me know when and where you would like to meet and I'm there!
Re: New to Melbourne...
While you're logged in, click on the pm or email box of the person you're contacting.
If that doesn't work, you have a technical problem that needs to be fixed.

When you click email, it sends your email a copy. Click PM next time it sends it to their eplaya box not an email account they might not even use.Tokyosexwhale wrote:So I guess when I treys to email you it went to my self... Forgot about sending a copy to yourself.

How are you finding this great city of ours now? Its such a multicultural city you should be fitting in fine but some people have a tendency to be up themselves.... don't worry about those...
