Yeah, I have a heavy 32 inch RCA sitting in the basement. No one wants them at all. Even the thrift shops won't touch them. We have a local recycler who might take it.

But then, I can't complain too much, since I won the new Vizio. Larry was even able to modify the entertainment center to hold it nicely. I worried, because that center was a bitch to get into the basement, and it will only come out in pieces now, so I really wanted the new TV to fit into it.

I can't set things on the curb here, too suburban. And this stretch has no sidewalks.

I hereby nominate an item as the most difficult thing to get rid of: A 32 inch television of the old cathode ray tube type. Weighs around 150 pounds.

Still way easier to get rid of than those disagreeably tenacious 5 last pounds I have on my body.

Fishy, later crts and dvd recorders have digital tuners.
Others need a hidef or lodef tuner/convertor box.

Your area must be better off than I thought, Elliot.

The sonys aren't bad.

Most people getting rid of the hidef sony, samsung, etc crts replace them with something worse in quality.
Fashion fad.
Only problem is the older crts don't have the software to run as a computer monitor.

People have been known to throw out the thin screens when they replace them.
Crazy world.

No one steals crts.
That's a plus here.
They'll kill you for a piece of shit thin screen.

Fishy, I have an old t.v. and still get free broadcast television reception. That is correct: television can be FREE. I know I do pay for a lot of things, but I don't like paying for the advertisements I have to watch, if it can be avoided. There was a government coupon program before the switch that subsidized my purchase of a digital to analog converter box that I run my home made antenna into. bingo. The picture is very good, but if the signal isn't strong enough it simply doesn't work. The old analog system at least allowed for poor reception, where the programs still made sense. It also seems to be a very sensitive as to signal origin direction. I can tune the signal strength by turning the antenna, sometimes 15 to 30 degrees makes a big difference. I had a big sony trinitron that I couldn't sell at a yard sale. Thankfully, the goodwill still took them when I needed it to be gone. I saved it's larger sibling and still enjoy it.

yeah I still use a 32" CRT tv, and have another, in case. Nothing wrong with it.
Elorrum: I don't know much about TV antennaes mine is on a pole leaning against my house. I'm interested in this sensitivity to direction stuff. I wonder if I could rig an "aimer"? do ya think? I get line of sight to Mt. Diablo, so when it was analog, got 20 some channels. Now, I get about 12, but off and on. I too got the boxes with the coupon when the switch was made.

ygmir, here's a very cool website, it will actually show a map of your address, the broadcast towers, the stations, and shows vectors from your home to them... oh, I get so few chances to say "vectors." (I hope I'm using it correctly.) At ground level, where I am, I get interference from neighboring buildings. I do better if the antenna is placed near the furthest corner window. I'd love to have a rooftop antenna. I've found, on occasions when I really wanted to watch something, like, the Superbowl, I put the antenna outside on a tall stick and run the cord back through a window. My aimer involves turning the stick, and leaning the antenna against the wall.

That site says I can get 25 channels. but leaves out Bay area, and I get several of them, probably because they are line of sight, like KTVU, KRON and some others.
I bet, if I had a good (not broken arms, bent and wobbly) antennae, and it could be aimed, it'd do great. Thanks for that sight.

The apples we got at a local orchard are really great this year; crisp & sweet & crunchy and the juice runs down your arm. And I bought 2 jars of apple butter, for Thanksgiving pies.

For anyone wanting to save money, the sfp sonys are far better than any lcd screen.
They have been high, but the market is saturated and they are dropping to cheap cheap, even finely tuned versions on the west coast.

The model list is incomplete.
Some tvs have digital tuners/atsc that are not listed on the specs, for many companies.

Most common models are 910, 940, and 960- the best one.
1400 lines horizontal, like a photo.
Sony also made a 40" in 800 line hidef.
These turn up, but are older.
There are better crts. including one that still brings a $1000.
Expect to pay Zero to $100 for an sfp, esp with stand.
They were worth $250 not long ago.

Sony actually introduced hidef projectors in the usa in 1982.

No, it's just the design for long range and more importantly, rejecting other interference.
They can be used in multiples too.


Blonder tongue makes some really rugged ones that will take mountain winds and anything else.
Older antennas may need to be rebuilt or cleaned to resolve corrosion issues.
Silicone dielectric can protect the connections.
