Hey there, Abkiwi, and welcome to ePlaya.abkiwi wrote:This was my first year and got the overall impression that this must be an amazing event for white people. I gained courage to walk up to people and say hello, but not a one came up to me. I'm a generally friendly person and have no problems meeting people in my life/striking up conversations with strangers, but I felt totally out of place at Burning Man. I wish I was white. Oh well.
Interesting to have an Aboriginal New Zealander here -- if I understand your name correctly. A fascinating culture, from what little I know about it.
As someone mentioned, the skin-color makeup of Burning Man has been discussed at length here over the years. I wish I were qualified to address it.
But I should mention that you accidentally stumbled into a pre-existing shitstorm. The rampant asshattery in this thread has precious little to do with you. The combatants have been at each others' throats for years. And some of them are "socks" -- the same people posting under false identities -- even arguing "among themself". (Under better circumstances, this can qualify as art.) You just happened to "come around the corner" as a brawl was ready to break out anyway.
Please believe me, there are countless threads on ePlaya that are not only civilized, but full of information and humor. Please look around, and feel free to participate in discussions that interest you.
I would like to apologize for what happened on your thread, but I do not have the authority to do that. So it will have to come from one of us at the time.

It's too bad that someone would feel at burning Man that skin color has led to excluding them from the event. Maybe they should talk to the dude running the Soul Train, he's there every year....Once you enter my house, it's our house.

I was hoping my post would serve to discourage further salvos on this thread between long-established combatants, but I failed.jkisha wrote:Not me! No socks ever. I am who I am, and don't feel the need to hide or confuse by using alter egos.

On another note, isn't the roller disco put on and run by a black man too?

To the original poster, it's something we need to discuss in the Burningman world and act on.
To the thread, say you were transported solo into the people of Cameron's Avatar. How would you feel?
BM presents (sells) itself as world changing. Let's get serious about it.
(I'm not talking ePlaya serious)

No. Since phonetically that comes out as "Phoque You" and that is now illegal.ygmir wrote: 3 "Q's"........... one more and you could get to tell him 4Q?
Unless you have a Sealing Permit.
Chances of that are Phoquing slim.

Okay fuckos, simmer down. Getting pissed at a post or someones ...viewpoint... is one thing, but it's turning into just out-and-out attacks. You are free to get as pissed as you want about the statements made, but try not to cross the line - it's covered in a lot of gray, and none of us want to be censors.

Re: I feel Burning Man is a White thing
Thank you for posting this Lonesomebri! I've never seen this video.
I was raised to be colorblind. My mom was discriminated against as a non-speaking Sicilian child. I've listened to Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech many times, and one of my favorite lines was this : "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
When I go to the playa, I see many faces of happiness, brethren and sisterhood. We're all there for many purposes, one being a collective of souls and spirits of the human family.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Re: I feel Burning Man is a White thing
I've seen that white leathered cat give the speech from his Soul Train at least 3 different years on the playa.
It's inspiring, and I don't dance.
As Eric has pointed out (I hope i get this right) with people seeking solutions at Burning Man to their own personal problems or quests, that's alot of responsibility and expectations to put on the event. The same goes for social and cultural issues. BM can't fix it all. As has also been pointed out by other great minds, it's not the salvation of the fallen world either. So it has many of the flaws found in the world in which it exists. Might not be right, or intentional, or by design, or whatever. As with anything else at Burning Man, if you notice something lacking that you want there, bring it.
