Wow, both of your projects are so nice.
You both have lots of talent.

Did you make your bed today?
I made my bed today!

It's 36"x6'2"!
Oh, and some inside wheel wells.

Re: Work in Progress 2013
Excellent, Figjam! PlayaPod 2.0 is coming along very nicely! Do you plan on insulating it, or does the whitewash do the job?
On a whimsical note, it might be fun to cut a piece of plywood the same size as the bed, pound a bunch of 3 inch nails through it, and place it points-up on the bed. Make a neatly lettered sign that says "Hippies Welcome".

Actually it will be called "Playapod part Dux".
I'm thinking of putting some 1" foam panels in just the roof.
I like having the wood everywhere so I can put hooks anyplace I want to hand stuff!
I'm going to add a fold down desk next to the bed for an end table and catch all.
The wheel wells on the outside are just the right hight for a fold down table along the whole side that will work perfect with those plastic chairs.

Seems like the main advantage of the pod would be the ability to insulate.

Beautiful work, Figjam, and as per your usual, all the details dovetail together so that the sum is greater than the parts.
Bravo.

Re: Work in Progress 2013
Right before the burn I got bored to the point of seeing a lawn sprinkler at the hardware store and wondering how it would look if I plumbed it with propane then blew some fire with it.
Turned out to be a good idea.
The little one: So now I'm combing the thrift shops for more... They look great when you invert the tank and start slugging liquid propane through 'em.
The impulse sprinkler in the center is for hot diesel fuel pressurized with propane up in our rock pit...

Fox fur, You remind me of those boys at the burn this year. Remember the ones I told you about??? cans of Carb cleaner + BBQ = flame throwers. Does your mother know what you're doing?

Re: Work in Progress 2013
I've been dragging my feet getting to this point because the double angle cuts for framing the front completely baffled me.
I managed it with no jommatree and it's far from perfect, but it will do for this project.
Now you can see how the "nose cone" should cut way down on the wind resistance.
It will act as storage space or a spare room for a short person!

Re: Work in Progress 2013
Great job on the nose cone! Yeah, that should really help with wind resistance (and incrementally help with MPG) plus give you some bonus storage.
Re: Work in Progress 2013
When I was thinking about MPG, the space shuttle came to me as an idea.gyre wrote:How did you decide on that shape?
I didn't make any blue prints, skeches, or calculate any measurements.
The length of the boat trailer detemined the size of the living space, and that dictated the angles for the front.
I think about what I want and just start building.
I only measure when I need to make cuts, so it's kind of like putting a puzzle together.
Less technical, but way more magical!

Re: Work in Progress 2013
I ran across these vortex generators.
Sort of interesting.
http://aerotechcaps.com/vortexgenerator.html
Aero can be very counter-intuitive, but sharp transitions are usually an issue.
And the tow vehicle is part of the aero of a trailer, so some very weird stuff works on trailer front ends.
I was thinking of a curved sheet of metal or flat sheet, starting out flat at the vertical joints, and then bent in a curve around the front.
This would leave sharp transitions top and bottom.
A splitter top and bottom might help, that is, a flat edge overlapping, to contain air that would spill over the edge, and guide it on the curve.
Almost anything will help though.
I hope you do coastdown tests, before and after the change.

Re: Work in Progress 2013
My current project started when I saw this:

It's WWII era packboard. Basically molded plywood and canvas. 24"x15" Surprisingly light. I looked at it and saw the base for something. Eventually I figured out it should the base for a rgb led matrix.
So, I took it apart to give it a bit of a clean. Not bad overall, just some surface dirt.
It will be 192 LEDs 12x16.
Using hardware cloth to space out the grid:
