Ok... For that ruggedly handsome gent with the hot-tanked hooters: apply a Dr Scholls corn pad over each nipple and cover the cutout hole with something like tegaderm. No more chaffing.

Just dont goof and use the corn *remover* pads... You might lose one or both, and that would be awkward in the locker room trying to explain it...

When Duct Tape bandaids are back in stock, if ever, I will be ordering a veritable shit-ton. Looks good on everyone, yeah? Those might be fun.

. . . I have a few left, but I am hoarding them for really good wounds.

It was awesome because 1) it made me picture FossaFerox in a bikini top or a silk blouse, and 2) I was fillllled with awe . . .

You are quite correct in having pointed out that "topless" is an unusual word for a man to use in describing himself. The avatar is slightly androgynous. :)

Ideally I'd like to not have anything visible there, so moleskin and the like are out. If I have to cover them with something physical, the winning ideas are nipstrips if they're discrete or dinosaur bandaids. Because dinosaurs are a boy thing.

As for my avatar being slightly androgynous, so am I. Though I prefer to shrug off my masculinity rather than drape myself in femininity. It's funny, though, the one thing that's showing is my jaw line which is one of my most masculine features.

Line your vest with silk instead of cotton, something smooth over the nipples will help the chafing. My coat didn't have a liner the first year and rubbed mine pretty raw but once I put a silk liner in it, it was much more comfortable.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

I don't think the vest was the culprit. Also, does silk really not get eaten by the playa? It still feels smooth 7 days in?

Silk might suffer a little, eventually--but the damage is to it, not to you. Although if something is washable in cold with vinegar and calgon/woolite/really gentle detergent, or dry cleanable, you may be able to get away with the exposure to playa dust. Don't test this with some sort of heirloom.

If something is snug and rubs against bare skin it's much worse when it's canvas or something else heavy or nubby, compared to something silky.

I wonder if that Tegraderm stuff would work well for nipples? A benefit (I suppose) is that they'd remain visible.

I have a pair of black silk pants I've worn for my last 4 or 5 trips to the playa, and I just have them dry-cleaned when I get home. Not worn out at all, even with me biking around & climbing shit in them, and they stay soft through the event. If I want them a little less dusty, I just go to the front of our camp and bang some of the dust out (trying to make sure no-one is down wind). Silk feels as good on-playa as it does off.

This year I learned, in the end, we can only take care of ourselves.

Thank you for your concern.

Black electrical tape crosses as nipple wear..... Oh, you so know I'm doing this next year.
I don't go male-blouseless but sometimes leave my shirt unbuttoned, and I don't think I've ever really worn a vest without a shirt (one of the things that makes me doubt my own burnyness). Using chapstick on nipples also sounds fun, if applied second-"hand"..... You know, I once commented on a woman I know who doesn't burn but lives like it daily...I have seen her put lip gloss on her nipples.....don't think blowing dust was the reason though. As for the uncomfortableness of this threads course, at the Meet & Greet I stood in on a conversation on the best product for women to use on a menstrual cycle (the silicon reusable things). So male nipples....phfff....

So I'm a bit late to this topic, but I was actually looking for a lot of this information myself, so thanks to the people who made suggestions earlier. I can, actually contribute something though: since it got brought up and wasn't answered, at least in my experience, liquid latex shreds like mad as you wear it and move. Some caveats on that, though: never done liquid latex on the playa (I was in NOLA the times I did), so there is that. Amount and speed of shredding/flaking may vary based on your skin chemistry (I'm one of those people that bandages and such don't stick well to-even spirit gum comes off on me). Also, I was wearing it all over, and the places that shredded fastest were the places that were moving a lot-my legs, for example, when I wore it for a Fat Tuesday march. Just on the nipples it might stay in place longer-maybe test it when you are not on the playa first, at least to see if your skin breaks the stuff down quickly or not.

My wife swears by olive oil... but she's not a guy.
I would suggest Chapstick. Seriously.

You can get stuff called "body glide" that athletes use to prevent chafing. It's sort of like a deodorant sized chapstick.

One of my gifts is homemade body butter and homemade lip balm... They both seemed to work miracles on the playa for a whole host of maladies and if you applied either one regularly I would imagine it would solve your very serious nipple problem! Both of my homemade body products have unrefined shea butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil (the lip balm also has beeswax which might help it stay on your nipples better) all of which are very healing and protecting against the dust or anything really... When we get closer to the burn I can tell you where I'm going to be camping and I'd be happy to gift you some! Or, if you are feeling adventurous, PM me and I'll give you my recipe and you can make it yourself!

I found The Body Shop body butter at the Grocery Outlet, and I love the stuff. It's mostly a mix of coconut & Shea butter and kept my whole body smooth & silky. Smells a lot better than bag balm, too. My cuticles even stayed nice with this stuff & my cuticles are dry & cracked off playa.

Otherwise, the band-aids will probably be your best bet,

Just go with the electrical tape X's over the nipples and then cut up some more strips of electrical tape to fashion a smile with a tongue sticking out. Now you have protected nipples and people will just think you have silly art on your torso. That's what I would do anyway. :P

Okay so I know I'm late to this thread but I have the answer!!!!!!

There is a product called Nipple Balm by Dr. Lipp, and it is like a much thicker more amazing vaseline. Put this stuff on your nipples once or twice a day and it will protect you from that horrible painful chafing. I have friends with babies who used it while breastfeeding, which is where I heard about it.

I used it last year because my first year I also had the problem you've described. It was AWESOME, my nipples were happy all week :). Also, it's thick enough that it won't rub off on your clothes, and it's not that pricey considering how well it works.

This stuff: http://www.drlipp.com/products/dr-lipps ... pple-balm/

Coconut oil would get all over the vest. I'll check out the Nipple Balm stuff, though I'm really starting to come around on the dinosaur band-aids idea...
