Having lived in both areas, I can say with confidence that SF traffic, even at its worst, is nowhere near what it is in NYC. Things will get congested during rush hours or if there's some kind of accident, but otherwise should be fairly easy to navigate.

Ferry Building is great on any day of the week for breakfast (something light or sit-down). Outside of the farmer's market days the building's ground level are all key farmer's market tenants who operate 6-7 days a week. There are a few cafes (including Blue Bottle, one of the best coffee places in SF) as well as a few bigger sit-down places with full menus. If I'm not mistaken, they're open early (7 or 8am Monday through Saturday) to accommodate commuters.

Oh, this just popped into my head... while I readily admit that LA's fashion district has a much bigger and better assortment of places to get fabrics, falling short of that, there are a few really great places in SF to shop. So if you're looking for materials for a playa project and are up for digging through a fabric store, you've got options. If you're looking for leather, you'll find no better than SH Frank on 17th. If you're looking for big assortment and great value, hit up Discount Fabrics on 11th/Howard. They have lots of fun fur, sparkly and stretchy stuff, and a lot of stuff. That's their warehouse outlet, so you go in and shop the fabric on rolls (they'll cut as small as 1/4 yard). They have a location on Haight as well (50 cents a yard more and not quite the assortment), so if you're interested in taking a peek but don't want to make it a destination, you can go there as an alternate.

We just got ride-share bikes. My boss says that riding a bike is, at times, the fastest way to get around the city. Driving in the city is bad enough, parking is a nightmare.

With a good enough electric bike to fill in the transit gaps, I could do without a car there.
