No. This guy's arguments are radically flawed and are not worth addressing individually.
Edit:
In case you missed the joke, this guy doesn't even know what the word "radical" means. The primary definition of "radical" isn't "extreme" it's "of or going to the root or origin; fundamental, inherent, foundational".

Re: Fuck Burning Man (The Ten Principles of WTF!?)
I seriously wish I was strong enough to take my own advice.
Into the shit show I go.
1) There is a fundamental point he seems to miss. The ten principles are talking about the culture of the event itself and of the related regional burns. No one is pretending they are how burners do or should live year round. Some of it will naturally bleed over, because the people I consider "true burners" have the moral base for the major elements of the 10 principles inside of them already. So while I'm generous as all hell when it comes to gifting my time to strangers in the default world (almost as much as I am on the playa) I don't think anyone is striving or attempting to live a decommodified life full of constant self expression and immediacy. It simply isn't possible. We sacrifice these principles to live 51 weeks of the year in a world covered predominantly by large cities, ordered not by social or moral values but by statutes that are mere echoes of those values.
That's why Burning Man is great. It's a vacation from an otherwise cold world, a chance to enjoy a life that is temporarily full of these 10 principles in a world with this many people in it. So yes, Burning Man is unsustainable. Of course it is. That's also why it's fucking necessary.
2) Burning Man never pretends it will save the world. Ever. He says the world is dying. He's probably right. Two things come immediately to mind. One, if the world can be saved it will be through technology. Many of the brightest minds in the fields that matter are drawn to Burning Man so they can recharge and be inspired. They come out to the desert in order to recover from the impositions of the default world. It's the ultimate vacation for someone who is forced to stare poverty, famine, climate change, and social injustice in the face 51 weeks of the year and a necessary one to their productivity. And if there is no hope? No answer? Well shit, even the Titanic had music playing when it sank. Make the best of it, because the impact of Burning Man isn't making things measurably worse. It's helping drive the wheels of our capitalist system and keeping things afloat a little while longer.
3) Seriously. Someone buy this man a fucking dictionary. He harks on the "rhetoric" without understanding what the word radical even means.
Edit:
Final word? Check the guys YouTube channel. Or don't. I'll save you the time. He has another video titled "Fuck Charity and Wellfare". He's a tool who missed anything even resembling the point when it comes to Burning Man if not the point of life in general.

Burning Man is a PORTAL
If you take issue with the word of the ten principles as they are written then write a way of expression which is beneficial to you

First: the guy doesn't seem to know the meaning of a lot of words (like using the word "liberal" to basically mean "new-ager) and he just kind of runs his mouth without ever getting to a point. I don't take the 10 Principles as anything more than a general guideline, except for the ones that are required to keep the permit (Leave No Trace and Decommodification [ie: BLM doesn't allow vendors in BRC]), but for the life of me I couldn't understand why he cared about the Principles at all. It's not like they're about to become federal law.

I hate this phrase with a passion. There is no such thing as a "true burner", there are just people who attend Burning Man. Declaring who is or isn't a Burner based on your own definition is Radical Exclusion. I can't say this enough: Everybody is doing it wrong by someone else's standards. Oh another one of these I-caught-your-hypocrisy-when-there-actually-isn't-any troll vids/posts. These always fail when we call their bluff.

Re: Fuck Burning Man (The Ten Principles of WTF!?)
lets not fight
I simply acknowledge that my personal identity is intrinsically in this
and divorce is not seeming to be possible
Two years ago I experienced a "bad" burn , sulked after a dirtwad socked me at the battle of the bands and I couldn't catch him to somehow sock him back
I tried to not go again saying that it was time to retire from brc
Well, then I went again anyway thanks to Molly,
and it was my best burn ever !
so, just saying, the assumption I have is that everyone always does their best
LET'S NOT FIGHT

Meh - it's half-baked youtube trolling. People say sensational and inciteful things to get a rise out of people, get traffic, views, shares, and likes. This guy is one of those people.

Sorry Eric, idealistic habits die hard. In my head that term now includes anyone who comes out to the playa with good intentions, but I should abandon the term all together. If I could I'd go back and amend that statement to "Anyone who attends who isn't a total asshat."

And not a very good one. I watched for two minutes and was bored stiff by his content/lack thereof and the overuse of the word "rhetoric". I didn't have the patience for another 12 minutes.trilobyte wrote:Meh - it's half-baked youtube trolling. Re: Fuck Burning Man (The Ten Principles of WTF!?)
There's nothing wrong with idealistic intentions, and I would bet that every poster on this board (who isn't a troll) came off their first Burn with the same sort of passion you have right now - and most of us still have it, otherwise we wouldn't be hanging around in here! The catch is remembering that there are as many ways to Burn as there are people at Burning Man, and that just because you disagree with how someone Burns doesn't make their way any less valid, or them any less of a Burner. The only caveat I personally put on that is for mooches (damn hippies), but, honestly, if they have a ticket and they want their experience to be as a leech, that's their right. I'm going to mock them, but they'll call me bougie for staying in an RV, so... *meh*FossaFerox wrote:Sorry Eric, idealistic habits die hard.

I meant to give him more of a chance, but he so relished buzzwords over substance that I lost patience.

Re: Fuck Burning Man (The Ten Principles of WTF!?)
That's about how I feel. As long as people aren't shitting up the place -- i.e. MOOPing, breaking the event rules (not so much "ideals"), and/or criminal behavior -- they're welcome to attend and burn how they want.Eric wrote:The only caveat I personally put on that is for mooches (damn hippies), but, honestly, if they have a ticket and they want their experience to be as a leech, that's their right. Everyone has an opinion. I'm going to BM for the experience and comrodary. Hoping to start a theme camp. Going to need people to join by bringing old bed sheets so we can create a large shade over the sound system and bass frequencies. Who's with me?
