And we have a winner. (Except you wrote caster when we are talking about camber.) In a nutshell, the kingpin is vertical, and the wheel is thin and flat, so they tilted the spindle to get the tire contact patch straight below the kingpin, in line with the steering axis. Thus the contact patch only rotates; it does not have to move in an arc.

Later, they figured out that they could tilt the kingpin sideways (king pin inclination), and wheels became wider so the kingpin could easily be near the middle of the tire.

Regarding the shifter I'm looking for: 35 bucks delivered to my door, unlimited quantities. This might be the solution.

Its amazing how much stuff you find when you go looking for a certain part that you set aside when you rebuilt a motor three years ago. Finally found it, along with parts to cars I haven't owned in 5 years...

Well I do that too, we have a whole book shelf full of manuals, but I usually send spare parts with the car when i sell it.

Parts AND books go with the car -- even though I know it is idealistic folly in most cases. (All right, so I kept one book, for a model I may buy again later (Mazda Miata). )

It was parked at my moms work (Mercedes dealership) and one of the car carriers backed into it and pushed it into another truck. Got word today that they are totaling it. But that's what we expected since there was a dent in the corner of the cab.

Let them total it and then buy it back.

A little scratch like that doesn't mean the truck is no good! 8)

If we had a place to park it we would. But we've been planning on selling it soon anyways.

Might this be the 4x4 chassis I want to build an MV on?

No, if it was a 4x4 I would definitely be keeping it. Tempting enough already as 2wd always wanted to make it into a desert truck. They are easily modified to 4x4 though since it was an option.

Actually, who cares if it's a 4x4 for building an MV?! You don't need 4 wheel drive on the playa. Pretty much the only time 2WD isn't adequate is if it rains, and then 4x4 will only bury you further. If I thought there was any reason to have 4WD on a Mutant Vehicle, I would have it.

I suppose you know that and want the transfer case for low-low gears... but a car/truck with an auto trans is fine just idling around on the playa without it.

Yeah. I was wondering why Elliot wanted it to be 4x4 for

I'd say the 4x4 would mostly be for the low range. depending on loading and heat, it might be nice to be able to run the engine at 1K rpm or so, for cooling and charging. with a low range and auto, you could pull it down and run higher revs in low range, as well as just idle.

Yes, the concept is to run in low range, but with manual front hubs disconnected. We analyzed this before somewhere around here -- I once had to ride the brakes a lot in one MV I drove.

They want 1200 bucks to get it back and we don't have anywhere to put it. If anyone wants it they can give us the 1200 for it and do what they want with it. Its in North San Diego.

Sorry Trillo if that is considered commerce

Took me a while, but I dug up this "paper" photo of the B. I have a lot more on an outboard hard drive, just need some time to plug it in. This had a hydraulic throttle and clutch because there was NO room in there. Custom radiator and fans for cooling, and the headers were a pain to fabricate. Mufflers ended up under where your feet would be in the front seat, and the heat was too much, did an asbestos floorboard gig. Saginaw 3 speed. Lots of metal massage, designing and redesigning, fit and refit. It was a fun car, was very dependable. It is in Chicago now on the show circuit last I heard. I put 45,000 miles on it. Got it rolling in first, went straight to third and just let it fly.....

Well crap, I got 1 85%. Guess I'm not "old enough". My first car was a 1950 Pontiac Straight 8 Dynaflow. 400 pound doors.

What a nice installation, Mgb327! "...just let it fly..." makes sense -- the 327 is a high-reving high-HP engine -- wide 350 bore on an older shorter stroke.

Much of your good driveability probably came from that carburetor. It's being sold with the Edelbrock name on it these days, but it is actually the old Carter AFB from decades ago. Quite possibly the best carburetor ever designed. So you did well with that choice.

On that note.... I worked in a Chrysler dealership in the 1970s. Some of the "muscle" cars had come from the factory with a Holley four-barrel -- the usual "hot rod" carb. Those cars soon became almost undrivable. We developed a trick to straighten the warped metering body, which helped a little, but then the factory came out with a recall fix: We installed a Carter AVS instead. The AVS is a close cousin to the AFB. Those cars ran like magic carpets ever since.
