Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
An adult sized playground - crocheted with love from rope - creating a place to suspend disbelief, play and open yourself up to the possibilities.
Inspired by large, crocheted, net-like playgrounds around the world - we are going to bump it up a notch and make one large enough for adults too.
Ours will be done all in white rope - and we're hoping to light it in such a way that the color changes at night.
You can see more about it here: http://sod.zoeyplatt.com
Come climb with us!

I recognize one the Suspension of Disbelief handiworkers! I'd better email her and ask her how she's doing.

I just saw your camp name...
I remember it from 01 & 02! I loved the labyrinth/maze you did. Some of my best memories on playa occured at Flight To Mars. I can only imagine what your plans are gonna be for 14!

We had a very successful test run of just a very small part of our project at SeaCompression (Seattle's decompression party).
People really enjoyed interacting with it - and it was very visually pleasing.
You can see more pictures here:

And join the Facebook group of you'd like to be involved in making it happen here:

(you don't have to be in the Seattle area - you can crochet away where ever you are - and bring your pieces to playa where we'll incorporate it into the final structure)

(btw - how do you size an image here?)

Love the project. I have some crochet art of my own in the works, but might have some time to do a portion for you. I often thought about doing some structural crochet work with paracord. Looks like the 1/4 rope works great too.theCryptofishist wrote:Talk to VultureChow.

Yes!!! We encourage anyone and everyone who'd like to keep their hands busy to get crocheting.
We decided at our last meeting to try to work with hexagons, 6 sided polygon, granny squares.
We're currently experimenting to see how big an average one will be using 2400 feet of 1/4' white nylon rope.
We'll put all of these together to create the final pieces.
So yes! please do feel free crochet away - we just ask that it be white nylon rope.

Re: Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
As part of the SOD team, I'm really excited! The only crochet project that I ever successfully finished was a stocking cap about 40 years ago, so this is a challenge! But hey - if I can do it, anyone can!
And Zoey's right - you can do a crochet piece anywhere and bring it to the playa! Join the Facebook page too, so we know what you're contributing! - We're gonna need a TON of rope! (Or more specifically TWO TONS - which is what it'll weigh when finished!)
There are lots more photos on the Facebook page!

Here's the latest design version, which will become a 4' diameter hexagonal panel. We have pattern instructions, so if you want to make one, just look at the Facebook page!

OhMyDog, this is getting exciting! The rope has arrived, we're just itching to get our paws on it, so any help you can send will get you lots of love from the SOD crew! And handmade thank you gifts! Believe you me, any bottle holders, pendants or pasties you get from me will have extra special Burner love embedded in them, since I'm all thumbs when it comes to knitting and crocheting!

This small display got SO MUCH LOVE at the Maker Faire! Kids of all ages and sizes tried out the hanging 'pods' and spent some time learning how to crochet with our rope! I'm just so excited about the great response we're gonna get out on the playa!

hell yeah - i enjoyed the installation that you guys had at seacompression immensely! can't wait to see your new one out on playa this year.
the journey is the destination...
Re: Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
Just so ya know - this project was not deemed worthy of any support form the bORG.
Consider me befuddled.
Not sure how the heck we can pull it off now since it takes so many hands to set up. Who knows if our hookers can even find tickets to get in. Ugh.

Re: Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
I think you may be looking at it wrong. The art grant application process isn't some kind of beauty contest, where art is being deemed worthy or unworthy of anything.
Burning Man has to go through hundreds of applications (I think more than 300 this year, though I'll leave the ARTery to post details if they choose to) that are collectively asking for millions of dollars. Every single year it's a moving target (because it's based on the number of and quality of the applications). There are a multitude of factors that can affect any project's chances, ranging from demonstrating an ability to execute, asking for too much, safety, LNT plans, etc.
I'm befuddled at why you and your team would not have made the effort to participate in one of the ticket sales. Art grants aren't announced until well after ticket sales take place, and even if you're awarded tickets there's no guarantee that the grant would include tickets for your whole team.
At best, Burning Man only provides a small portion of a project's total funding, you would be responsible to raise the bulk of the funds yourself (just like everybody else). Speaking personally I'm a bit alarmed that you would so easily be considering throwing in the towel on your project - especially since you've already taken thousands of dollars from the community for the project.

Re: Suspension of Disbelief - giant crocheted playground
Clarification: Our disappointment wasn't regarding not getting money from the bORG - it was support in general - tickets being our biggest barrier. Those of our crew who could afford it, and were able to, DID purchase tickets during the open general sale - but I'm not sure if you heard: Tickets sold out in 44 minutes. It's our new reality, period.
That said - Burning Man reached out to us and found ways to help that, in my opinion, are more effective than grant money ever could have been. So, we're very, very, grateful. Thank you!
Now that I, personally, have dropped my pouty pants and pulled up my tickled TuTu, we are back to plotting, planning and stitching away.
Expect to find us on Playa - hopefully even bigger than we'd originally planned all hanks to your support and enthusiasm. You guys have no idea how amazing this rope feels when you climb into it and curl up. It's a beautiful, wonderful, magical thing.
