Ethics of using a game camera
Re: Ethics of using a game camera
I too was alarmed as Trilo mentions, but that issue seems to have been resolved.
In fact, methinks this is a very productive thread. A legitimate question was asked, and replies were offered with a clear majority on one opinion. Matter settled, and now we are all able to contribute to the resulting art.
As for anchoring the pole in the ground, I'm guessing many will suggest using a power auger to dig a hole for a 4x4, then meticulously refilling the hole by tamping and wetting. Me, I would probably drive a 1 1/4 " steel rod in the ground, and clamp the pole to that, or simply slip the pole over it.
Now... as I think about it, this rod might not be people-proof, what with so much leverage. And I don't know how thick a rod could be driven in by hand. I drive 1" rod about 30" in with an 8 # sledge, so I'm thinking a 12 # sledge could to 1 1/4" rod. To be people-proof, 1 1/2 " rod should do, but might take a gorilla to drive it in. The rod should have a very smooth surface.
Of course, to pull a steel rod out, you would weld a very stout ring to it beforehand, so you can pull it out with a jack or hoist.
Much better ideas will be along soon, I'm sure.

Re: Ethics of using a game camera
Thank god that WWIII was avoided with Vulture accepting the game-camera armistice and adapting the camera-tree agreements of 2013. Peace in our time. Yeah, taking pictures of unsuspecting people looking at your art to capture a moment in time, otherwise lost, for your own enjoyment sure seems perverted and creepy and anti-community.....if that's the only way a persons mind can frame it. Pretty revealing, but not of the OPs intent. The game-cam is obviously a flawed idea now that I've seen what kind of thoughts go thru people's head. Wow. Sure, non-consent photos against the rules, but this thread got alittle further along than that admonishment. I think I might set up a game-cam trained on a stack of PBR bait, signs saying "This Area Under Constant Camera Surveillance" printed up in every known human language, along with a person fluent in sign language on duty 24/7. If only there were some way I could get the photo victims to somehow wear feathers for the shoot....

Re: Ethics of using a game camera
Thanks Elliot. I have a vision of the top of the tree as a writhing mass of blinking camers. Some stationary and blinkink, some zooming in an out, some panning and scanning. Like it's alive. And I think it's doable especially since I've got someone from the property dropping off the cameras next week. Not costing me a thing to at least play around with the idea.
It the mounting that's got me nervous. I imagine there could be 100 pounds of camera on the top 2 feet of this and making it sturdy might be beyond me.
I was also thinking of constructing something more like a radio antenna:
Plenty of time to figure this out if I'm going to try something for a spring regional.

Re: Ethics of using a game camera
I am reminded of the tower Drew and Mindy (Bluemandrew on the eplaya) built several years back with their camera mounted on it. The idea was that it would rotate 360 degrees daily snapping pictures throughout the week. So what ended up happening? It took one lousy picture before breaking down for the duration. Best laid plans of mice and men, or so they say.
Re: Ethics of using a game camera
VC, my mind boggles at all the ways the tower could be built.
At one end of the scale I have a 25' street lamp post! Indestructible, but takes many strong men to move. And a very deep auger hole in the Playa to install.
How about my 20' aluminum Hobie Cat mast? Much lighter, but of "air foil" profile.
At the other end of the scale, a very light aluminum sail board mast, slightly tapered. Probably not strong enough.
A trusswork tower like in your photo can be very strong, but would take time to fabricate. It would look "professional", and with a wide base it could be secured with one good rod anchor inside the footprint. Bulky to transport -- unless fabbed to disassemble, which would, come to think of it, not be hard to do.
That brings us to scaffolding -- common construction scaffolding, such as you see tons of on the Playa. By itself it is too ugly, but you could cover it with fabric or plywood bearing your supporting signage. A 2' or 3' camera post could easily be fabricated and mounted on one corner of an 8' tall scaffold. One stout rod anchor inside because of the cloth/plywood.
PM me if you want to collaborate -- and pay for materials. But I could not go to any Regional.

Re: Ethics of using a game camera
How about something simpler and probably even more baffling.
Set up a smallish tarp in a bright color on the ground, 10' square or so. Put cameras all around it aiming in. Put nothing on the tarp but a sign that says this tarp under 24 hour surveilance.

Savannah: I don't know what it is, but no thread here escapes alive. You'll get 1 or 2 real answers at minimum, occasionally 10 or 12, and then we flog it until it's unrecognizable and you can't get your deposit back.

PROTIP: For those scenes with lots of body parts, or just dead bodies, Microsoft ICE is a great utility for automatically stitching photos together.

Re: Ethics of using a game camera
I was thinking about setting up a hidden camera in one of the portopotties and turning it on whenever a hot chick went in.
What I need to know is what's available reasonably cheap that is small enough to hide and works well in a low light environment.

What I need to know is why you want to watch hot chicks take shits.
No, actually, I guess I don't need to know that.

Down on the old Animal Farm we all have parts to play, some make sure things are done the right way.... Everyone agrees on that.

Well I had only the purest of deviant intentions. It's all about the panty dropping. I don't wanna put the cam down in the waste tank for the squirt-view. What kind of pervert do you think I am?! I am offended.
