Without traffic it's about a little less than a 2 hour drive.
Yggy, I can help with the list or start it. Here or FB page?

might be as good here, something like "Amtrakathon 14, who's bringing what?".....unless that's not ok here, then I guess FB.lucky420 wrote:Without traffic it's about a little less than a 2 hour drive.

Thanks 420!
yeah, VC. IIRC, last year we left around noonish? and got there, froze, stopped in at Brunos for some food and came back IIRC about 6 hours.

IIRC, we weren't back by 7:00... but we didn't leave right after brunch>?
we could do it though. I'm wavering between coming for Friday night,
or staying over Sunday, but I don't think I can do three nights.
I am accumulating portable light shows and small hi-fi system.... with FM transmitter for multiple baby hi-fi systems.

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
I think you're right, we left like after 1 or so?
yeah I'm deciding if I wanna be friday or sunday night, too.
dang, why can't we all be in Reno most of the time, leaving occasionally to go collect royalties on something or other and then come back to have fun?

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
Well,fooey.
Looks like I really ought to pass on this year's AMTRAKathon, if the Playa is going to be part of next year for four of us. I've recently taken on a hefty monthly payment, on top of three promises for the next burn. (Plus really wanting to go again, myself!) The ticket sale is so close to the Reno Extravaganza that it's not really a good idea for me to go.
Being the responsible sister/sister-in-law/mom type that I am, I will definitely keep my promises, while not missing any monthly payments on my new 'shed/barn', and still have enough for gas to get to the Playa in August. It'll take some 'creative banking', I do believe!
So, yeah... fooey indeed. I'll really miss seeing all you wonderful friends. It was so fun last year...

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
<bump>
We're about seven weeks away from AMTRAKathon 2014 so I thought I'd bump this up and start the planning discussion. Also, for those who are not heading up on the train but meeting in Reno and would like to stay at Harrah's, please PM me and I will see to it you are in at our cost. That Sands is a little cheaper but, well, unless you're in a suite like Yggy, you get what you pay for. You will need to book the Sands yourself.
Let's see, party begins 7ish on the 17th floor of the Empress Tower. Look for the prostrate bodies littering the hall and you know you've found the place. Needs: Liquor (I'll be bringing absinthe naturally and perhaps a bottle of champagne if there's any left), food...what else?

I'm bringing something I would consider as dinner, or ordering pizzas. Maybe bread and cold cuts and cheese.

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
Just wanted to put it out there that last year several suites had malfunctioning jacuzzis. While that was great for bringing down the room costs for those who had booked those suites, the Sands communal hot tub closed at something like 10:00. Harrah's doesn't have one at all. Also, when you check into your room at Harrah's, test the toilet. When several of us stayed there last May, only one of the three rooms had a suitably functioning commode. Something to do with water conservation or something.

What time does the train get in?
How many are staying at the Sands? I'll have a vehicle down at the station and can help get you and luggage over to the Sands

My flight out on Sunday is 8:17pm. Does that leave time for the playa trip, because, if so, I'm totally in.

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
3:56 p.m. The station is directly across the street from Harrah's. I don't think anyone on the train is staying at the Sands. Unless it's raining or snowing, walking over to the Sands for the party takes only about 6 minutes so we probably won't need a ride.lucky420 wrote:What time does the train get in?
Also, the hot tub on the 17th floor of the Empress Tower actually closes at 9 p.m., which sort of sucks.

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
I'm going to reserve the back room at Carver's for Sunday brunch. If you have a Harrah's card, you can get two-for-one and for those we are meeting at 11:30 a.m. If you use the coupon in the Bonus Book of Extras (everyone on the train gets one, but you have to be in the group) you get two-for-one beginning at noon. If the $20 doesn't matter to you, then show up at 11:30. This is a purely optional event of course.

Re: AMTRAKathon 2014
At the risk of sounding stupid, is the password Pineapple for hotel rooms in Reno or Amtrak tickets? Sorry, but the title of the post has me a bit confused. Thanks.Dr. Pyro wrote:The password is: Pineapple.
OK gang, we have sold 1/2 the seats on the party snow train from Roseville to Reno, heading out on Saturday January 25. I am now able to start taking reservations at Harrah's at our group rate ($64.15 including all taxes). We have requested three suites (Yggy wants one, Red and Twist want one, and the other if they come through is open for the first group who wants it). They run $154.55 assuming they're even available. We will open the train itself up to people (and their friends) who didn't go last year on November 1 if it isn't sold out by then. If you have gone in the past you and your guests are "grandfathered in" until the end of October. Then it's everyone for themselves. From what I can recall everyone had a pretty good (and decadent) time and you even get to check me out in my tuxedo. And we have reserved a room at Carver's for Sunday brunch beginning at noon. So, who wants to party in Reno?
And remember, the password is: Pineapple.

I think it's the ultra-semi-secret password among the group. It may be an in joke from last year.

Thanks, Fishy. Again, sorry if I'm missing some sort of inside joke, but are folks organizing discounted rooms again this year like there were at the Sands last year?
It was a great deal, and I really appreciate whomever organized it last year. Thanks!

Yes, this is a trip later this month for releasing ya-yas in Reno. The Sands thing will be there some time this summer and will have a title that will more closely resembles "Barbie Death Village Hotel Deal".
