Burning Man Symbol question

Post by geospyder » Sun Nov 24, 2013 8:10 pm

I'm thinking of getting a Burning Man tattoo and I like this one.

BUT - the question I have is...Is this an accepted "general" Burning Man symbol or is it strictly used for the Burning Man Rangers, which I am not.

That's a great symbol. There are no restrictions as long as you are not planning on selling your arm (or whatever place you are planning on putting this).
Can I suggest something really cool like this one, as seen on Simon?

I had that sneaking suspicion and wanted to be sure. I'll stick with the stick man :D Thanks for the confirmation.

I'm giving this a nudge over to Politics And Philosophy, since that's a better fit.

To answer the question, I agree with misfit. Sticking with the regular man symbol/trademark works, or you and your tattoo artist could come up with something iconic yet unique to you.

I respectfully disagree with Misfit & Trilo on the use of that image - while I agree that you shouldn't be sticking the Med symbols (for ESD) or the Ranger name on it when you aren't one, the "Man with swoosh" has become almost as well known as the basic Man logo, and is altered by other camps for their use, much like the standard Man logo is. Hell, if you look at this page of google images, you'll notice similar imagery that has nothing to do with Burning Man.

I would alter it to make it personal, but I don't see a reason that the basic image couldn't be incorporated (with the exceptions already listed above)

Agreed. The tattoo depicted is handsome but simple, and does not denote a department. All my ESD logos (hats, shirts) are detailed, specific and obvious to ESD, not just the Man-with-swoosh.

For example, note this Man-with-swoosh + additions at the top left of this page. Key to the design are the circular blue medical and red fire images inside the swoosh. They also write "EMERGENCY SERVICES" on the ring itself.

Another example. See also the Ranger logo. Note also that the Ranger logo always says "Ranger". They always label themselves clearly.

If concerned, email ESD and the Rangers.

I happen to know a man with the simple Man-in-swoosh tattoo. It looks very nice, and doesn't seem to confuse anyone.

I have an idea and we'll see how it works out this evening. Nothing fancy -just the man and a couple words. I'll post a picture when competed.

I like it. :) The cool thing is that if you wanna add on to it, you can. Circle of flames, a map of the city behind it, whatever.

I rather like it how it is, especially the color fade.

When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.
