This year at BM I got exposed to more electronica than ever. Great stuff for dancing, and it's fun to play along with my drum. I also find that if I put it on while at the gym I set a pretty good pace for my cardio.

But I am not clear about what the difference is between house, break, trance, psycodellic trance, etc. What are all the sub-genres? How can you identify them? Who are some of the best practicioners of these sub-genres? Whose CD would you recommend that I get.

Friday night before the burn this year I danced all night at Lush. I loved the DJ, and a little after dawn they handed out his CDs for free (a nice gift). I "loaned" mine to a DJ friend and that was the last I saw of it. Anybody know who he was and where I can find his CD?

Well it's obvious that you have a computer. If you have a pc download mediaplayer 10 and rip you cd's to the computer. If you have a mac .....I dont know.

Okay I won't even get into sub-genres...my description isn't perect and is subjective. I spin house and have been doing so for 9 years...I have been going to dance events since 1992. So here is my BASIC descriptions of house music and no sub-genres unless later requested. I will post a link to one of my favorite mixes that is a free downloads..

House is a basic 4/4 beat with a pretty solid kick to it. House is most known for its sounds that resembles "boom-tish-boom-tish-boom-tish-boom-tish" House is a very wide and vague term for the many sounds that it has spawned. I am not a big fan of the site at all. I have found a lot of inaccuracies and avoid it at all costs. Some people find it helpful and that cool but it isn't my cup of tea..

FWIW, Man-O-Sandwich, the site is pretty helpfull for a newbie like me. I can't keep track of the history and geniology. But seeing how one form connects to another is visually satisfying. And being able to bring up quick examples of the various types is handy too.

It seems obvious that I won't be able to swallow this whole. But the various links you guys have sent give me great ways to look at this music. And it's interesting that I DO know the roots more than I thought.

I'll now tell you a conversation that started this line of inquiry. After the LA Decom I was telling a couple of girls about an after party at Paynie's house and that there would be a DJ. One girl asked if they were going to playing House or Trance. She was SO over House (or was it Trance) and didn't want to go if her brand of music was not played. At that point I decided that she would be best served finding her own party. But it started me thinking. I would wander by a DJ booth at Decomm, hear some music that pulled me in, but didn't know how to find that music again, or describe it. The best I could hope for was to get the DJ's name and try to find a mix or something. So I figured I would learn something about what I'm listening to.

I like it simply because it makes the foolish attempt to split hairs between genres like goa and psy-trance.

I also like the tree aspect of it.

Damn you. I just lost well over an hour browsing through the site. At least now I have some kind of clue to what all those electronic mp3 shoutcast streams are that have been piping through my speakers the last few years...

Hell yeah. This one has been taking up too much time in my house for a few months now.

The kids went from Playstation RPGs like Zelda to DDR and then to the web in search of "more of that cool rave music!".

They use the Ishkur samples to figure out what they like and then hit the web in search of. More allowance money now going for used CDs on amazon & ebay than toward video games. And I get to listen, too.

It's funny, I can't tell you what the difference is, but my tastes can... I know that I lean torwards House and Trance and stray from Drum and Bass and that sort of stuff.... But for all I know D&B is part of House and Trance.
