Got the fire going.. toasting the house.. Poor neighbor kitty, She eats at our house and drinks from the coy pond.. This morning the pond is mostly ice over..She found a rock near some open water..Wish I could figure a way for water to the outside kitties.. The pond is good.. But I am fearful of one of them breaking the ice..

they make heated drinking devices, that plug in and use very little energy. I've seen'em at feed stores and such, or you could probably make your own, UJH.

Maybe a bowl, on a small (shoe?) box with a hole cut out of it (to let the bowl through partway) and a small light bulb inside the box, under the bowl?
or a very small amount of salt in the water, will lower the freezing temp.

They were lost in the snowy mountains between Lovelock and BRC since Sunday, when they tipped their Jeep over.

I know that area quite well.
lots and lots of roads, gullies and fairly narrow canyons.
combine that with a silver jeep, and it's probably pretty hard to spot from the air. especially on it's side.

Hell if it's upside down they aren't gonna drive it anywhere before help gets there... I'd burn all the tires if I needed to.
Environment be damned if my family was freezing to death. A tire burns a long time, so hot you'll be in your t-shirt in the snow anywhere near it. And the plume of black smoke would be a good beacon.
(Maybe that was the main reason they lit it?)

The plane that went down in Idaho? The search has been called off until spring. They can't get up into the mountains to look. Sad.

The Jeep family... he heated rocks to put in the Jeep to keep the kids warm. Even upside down, it was shelter.

Good for that family that was found, though, wow!

Okay let's have some :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: and maybe Yggy will pour in some of his chocolate when he gets in here. 8)

*pours self a cup of coffee, premixed with real vanilla and then adds in the turbinado sugar**

Ahhh. Great way to start the morning.

Glad to hear the family was found. Burning the spare tire to stay warm was a smart move, both from the warmth generation standpoint, and from the standpoint of an identifying plume of smoke.

I've been watching the Weather Channel for my real life drama, a program called "Coast Guard - Alaska". Those guys are heroes. Every single day they serve. Imagine some of the rescues that they do as a matter of routine, in all kinds of conditions - snow blowing with less than 100' visibility, pitching seas, and they even do it on LAND in some of the outer Aleutians.

The rescue swimmers are not only in tip-top physical shape, they have superb situational awareness, and they're trained EMTs.

[media]

I'm calling down all possible blessing on the Coast Guard for all they do up there. I highly recommend the program on the Weather Channel.

You're welcome. I also use another clause that describes the level of teamwork they have (see it in the video?) - Unit integrity.

Teams with individual situational awareness and unit integrity are WINNERS.

those are great, but he can't hunt with them on, I just ask him to wear them so we don't fall with me on him. I can't imagine slipping on ice and having a battle clad rabbit land on me!

yeah, it's nice to read about people with knowledge enough to keep themselves safe and such until help arrives.
and the plane.......I lost friends in a plane crash outside Reno, sorta the same way, bad weather, they figured it iced up so fast they couldn't turn around and hit a mountain somewhere near Fernely......probably 15 years ago now. They had to search a week or so to find them, IIRC.

Glad the people with the kids were found safe and sound. And they were smart enough to burn a tire but...
Does anyone else think it was pretty damn stupid to go 4 wheelin on a day when there was lots of fresh snow, the high was about 17 degrees with a 3 yr old?

Ok, I'll leave now before someone throws a bottle at me.

Have a great day everyone!

Thing is, Lucky, just catch the bottle and drink it all without sharing with the thrower.
That'll teach 'em!
