Exactly - if' you're going to be a stickler for proper grammar and sentence construction, how could you ever enjoy poetry? If you do enjoy poetry, how can you say you're a stickler for grammar and sentence construction?

It's sad, but it's also part of the life of a board. Think of the people that have come and gone since you've been here - personally, I joined shortly after this version went live, and I've seen some of my favorite posters leave in the last decade, but I've had new favorites come in. I took an almost two year break myself, others on here have done the same. Some leave and come back, some leave and move on. Tom has been a great addition to the board, I hope he'll be back, but I also hope that about all our wayward posters.

Yeah, one would think that right? But unfortunately, even poetry can be ruined when taught: when the teachers are sticklers on meter and rhyme and all that stuff. Yeah, I know it's important to know those concepts, but for some teachers it's only about the regimented reading. Then kids, like myself, start expecting that these rules are what represent "poetry" and tune out. It really is a shame, and it's probably (among other reasons) why people only start appreciating reading these kinds of media when they're adults.

I believe in the old saying that to successfully break the rules we must first know them. Great authors often break rules, and to wonderful effect. But it must be based on the same language, for that to work.

Not to brag, but.... (Oh heck, I'll brag if I want to!) I write for a magazine, and some years ago the Editor told me of this exchange between him and the proofreader:

Proofreader:
Oh Mr. Editor, I'm wondering about this sentence that Elliot has written. It just isn't quite right....

Editor (reads the sentence in question):
Doesn't matter if it is quite right or not. It's darned good writing.

Of course, I live for such praise -- and then I charge more!

I do believe that language is a living thing, and can be toyed with. And when I read older books, I see how it has changed. (Not always for the better.) But some, things are just wrong.

I like Tom; he was one of the first personalities whose posts I enjoyed, and he's made me laugh more than a few times. I got to meet him this year and was happy about that. But if he's not feelin' it lately, I have to understand. There are a number of former ePlayans that I miss.

I like Tom, too. we've conflicted and agreed..........but see him on playa and he's all hugs and smiles..and you shoulda seen him on our first meeting in 08: he had promised me a shot of his absinthe, and, someone stole it!!! it ranted and ran all over the neighborhood, trying to find it, or any, to keep his promise.
That counts for a lot.

I hope he'll be back.

I should put in my two week's notice just to get everyone to say nice things about me.
Then, due to popular demand I'll reappear.

for the record, i was the first one to wish him well.

i was merely commenting on the 2 and half pages of Grammar correction without a mention of Mr. Servo.

he will be missed, i have no real beef with tom...He's a Burner, and he knows what he's doing out there, in the dust.

his fellow traveler on the other hand...

but i digress...none of my business...stepping back...Hope all is well and enjoy your Holiday Season if you are out there, lurking...

It could be we went all grammatical as a way of coping with his departure, by focusing on the trivial.

I think there may also be some discomfort with departures in general. They conjure up a number of emotions ranging from happiness to indifference to sadness to mild (or greater) disbelief, depending on the interaction of two parties, and the expression of that emotion can seem pointless, ungracious, or perhaps just private; something best taken to message.

Oft times, in this day and age, spell check can be the culpret. Especially when one doesn't have/take the time to proofread. I find myself editing my Facebook posts after someone makes a comment and I actually re-read what I wrote.

I doubt that you are the problem. Fishy. Most of us are ok, I'm sure. I think that it is just hard to ignore the resident troll sometimes. He does tend to be a bit obnoxious.
