Wikipedia says it has only one diff and is subject to windup which breaks trannies if driven on pavement. It is 1 inch too wide for US roads anyway. Of course, you might not ever need to drive it on pavement, but it might easily have tranny damage already.

Just trying to save you Eight Grand.

your concern is appreciated, Elliot.
the front and rear drive lines can be removed, leaving center drivers only.
also, "hubs" can be fabricated for each axle end, or even dummy ends, to be switched for off road.

I also think he's going to be softening on the prices.......he already mentioned some stuff he'd like to trade.
dang, one was not my M274 mule though........

Hmmm… a gas straight-8 Rolls Royce from the '60s… that's the biggest "aw shit" I can see in it. But if you felt up to swapping in a Cummins 6BT or even a 427 and Allison from an old medium duty or bus…
It looks like it's got good tires and in pretty good shape, saw a lot of rust under front window, there could be some metal work to make it watertight, but damn that's an impressive rig! And they say it has a knuckle boom! That makes it 500% better!

yeah one has a knuckle boom, maybe another too. one has a 25K lb. winch in the rear as a retriever.
the body/hull is supposed to be 1/4" plate, so, a little rust is maybe not such an issue.

I gotta sell my M274 mule to help pay.........

See if he will trade a deuce and a mule for it.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Yep, for Ford it was the first smooth side bed. Chevy had its smooth side Cameo bed in '55 but the '55 - '57 Chevy Cameo was still a narrow box with fiberglass style side fenders in place of the stepside fenders.
There was a smooth side Crosley in the 40s but no one cares. Crosleys were ultra cheap and in my opinion pretty much junk even when new.
I always found the Studebaker Champ pickup from the early '60s interesting and cool.
It used the Lark passenger car front end and cab and the box off of the late-'50s Dodge, which didn't match at all.

"Hire" me to check out the 6x6? Hell it would be fun.
I could at least tell you if it ran right and how much worse it looked in person compared to the photos (you know how it is).
And I could certainly put the knuckleboom through a test exercise.

I am assuming these things haven't much top speed for freeway travel.
When Elliot said it had only one differential did he mean between the first, second, and third axles or did he mean two of the axles are solid with no left-to-right diff?
The latter would make driving it home out of the question for sure.
Is it street legal at all, with plates, turn signals and all that?
I know he said it was an inch too wide but I doubt you'd ever get that ticket.
I suppose having it trucked might actually be cheaper. And safer, since you don't know if you'd make it home without something in that unknown 40+ year old beast breaking. "Hello, AAA? Yeah, uh, my pickup truck broke down... yeah, it's a bigger one... "

wow Cap'n, that'd be sweet!!

so, IIRC, it has camber gears for each pumpkin and a driveline from transfer case to each pumpkin. Sort of a crude posi for left and right, and solid lock between the 3. So no, you can't drive it, stock on pavement. The wind up tears them up. They're made for off road, only.
but as stated, I've read about making hubs on two of the three axles, so you only have one driver, and that works probably fine.

I think top speed is about 45 mph, considering they weigh about 20k and only have 220 h.p.

I'd agree about the "inch" too wide, in that it'd be licensed as a "historic vehicle" and prolly overlooked as such. Not like I'd be driving it to work.........haahaa

with the independant suspension and all, they gotta be great off roaders. only problem being size and weight(which is formidable).
I've also read about putting the 5.0 Cummins in.

I'd recommend www.uship.com if you're not already familiar with the site for finding someone to haul that thing if you do buy it. Which you should totally do.

Honestly, Id pass on it. Unless it will live on a farm, its pretty useless. You can buy a surplus military 6x6 that is a true flex fuel vehicle. It will run on diesel, gasoline, kerosene, pretty much any combustible fuel. And its driveable on the street.

Well... Went up to work on the jeep today pulled the shifter out but pulling out the seats and carpet took a little longer than planned so it got too dark to work before I could put it back together.

I found out my little car has a transmission going out on it...

looks like if I drive it only when I need to, it's should last a few month. And in that time, I'm looking for another car...Fuck...oh, wrong thread?
Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

It's always far better to have that happen at home and NOT on the road to BRC.
