New Options for 2014 Satellite Photo

Post by some seeing eye » Sun Dec 15, 2013 9:05 pm

We lost our free satellite photo capability last year. http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=65443 There may be a new option in the Flock 1 constellation of earth observation satellites being launched by Planet Labs.

I'm giving this a nudge over to Q&A, since that's a better fit for general preparation stuff.

It's difficult to really call it much of an option though, unless they've got a bird and have expressed any willingness to make a pass, take pictures, and make them available freely. It may probably be easier (and less costly) to work on Digital Globe and/or Getty Images to see if they'll be a bit kinder on rates for non-commercial use.

There is also another one Skybox Imaging. Both are Bay Area. Given the BM network, it is likely there is a first or second degree connection.

GeoEye/IKONOS is a 2 satellite system.

The new companies constellations of 24-28 satellites, depending on the constellation design, may be able to revisit non polar locations 3-4 times a day. Skybox is higher resolution comparable to the non-military GeoEye. I believe the whole Planet Labs system will be operational well before August.

So hey readers, if you know someone there or ORG maybe there is a non-commercial infinite use possibility. There may also be a leo arrival - exodus use case.

With all the drone footage from this year, I forgot to even look for a satellite photo.

It's fine really, I'm pretty sure a satellite would only have managed to capture a cloud of drones anyway.

To be honest I'm surprised we don't have Google street view by now. Of course all the street signs will be moved by the 3rd day.

I'm sure someone could write some code to blur all the faces.
