In other words, the ones who likely had the most anxiety on the subject... If it's true that humor is a release of anxiety (or at least can be) then, not funny at all. Funny odd, not funny ha-ha

It's a little disturbing how Germans and Israelis can find this funny...but perhaps it was all in the context. I'll chalk this down as a "should have been there" moment. This jacket was carefully crafted, by yours truly.

I can't speak to the German side, but Jews my age and younger have been raised on such a heavy diet of holocaust, that it genuinely is a release and a bit of dark humor. Immediately after the holocaust, there was a reluctance to discuss actual war time experiences. The pendulum swung to the other side starting around the 70's to the point where it was almost overbearing to a young Jewish kid growing up in NJ. Israel is even more intense.

I wouldn't say I find your coat "funny," but it is amusing because it is so non-threatening when taken out of context and is a great juxtaposition the the Burning Man ethos of radical inclusion and fuzzy-bunnyness.

It's a huge burden to put on the shoulders of a child. My guess is that the lure of the forbidden is part of it. Like saying shit or fuck or damn when you're 11 years old.

Personally, I've been making bad Nazi & holocaust jokes since I was a mere kid, and I'm both Jewish and study history (I started studying WW2 in 4th grade, because I was that annoyingly smart kid). I'll make jokes about anything - it's a Jewish tradition. If you can't laugh in the face of suffering, why laugh at all? Laughter reminds us that we're still alive, and that we're not defeated.

I was going thru my burn pics and finally found one I was willing to post.

This one's dedicated to Trilo, since I spent days napping in the proximity of his camp... and actually got one of those aviator suits (which still sits in its crate, unopened, as I'm not sure how).

I've been back a few times post-burn, but unfortunately keep falling into the sea on the edge of the playa, and having trouble regaining solid ground.
