Actually it was a lot of fun, and I awoke without a hangover! In fact, I was able to run four miles before breakfast, so that's something to celebrate.

Kidding aside for a moment though. Even in my youth, on my best day, I was never in the kind of shape to be able to run a marathon. That you have run marathons Doc, and still run for that matter, is a characterstic much to be admired.

Morning, YG, that looks soooooo good!Yeah, it is slow time. Things really won't get started until Thursday at the earliest, or likely on next Monday. Been a nice vacation time with lots of parties. More nice weather, dang!

Hey, FJ, because today is the last day of this year. Morning Elorrum, Anti M, Shroom, HG and any lurkers that might be out there. Always happy to see the start of a new year cause it means we can start planning for this year's Burn! Something to look forward to! Going out to the newly restored Muir Beach for a walk and to see what has been done. Very close to where we live. Used to take the kids there 50+ years ago. Hard to believe that it was that long ago. Remember one of my kids losing the keys to the VW van out there. Had to hitch hike home to get a spare set. Was so mad that day, but it all went away when I saw her beautiful face when I returned with the keys in our other car and rescued them all. Ahh, memories.

Carpe Diem!!!

Good morning, all.

Coffee time.

:coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

I got my best Xmas gift of all yesterday in the mailbox.

On Saturday, as recognition for absolutely great service, I gave the postman a tip of $60.00 with a thank-you note inside a normal Christmas card, staying close to the mailbox as he arrived. We talked, and we had a laugh or two. The former tenant of my apartment was an arab with the last name of Elrashid, and my postman used to drop of Elrashid's old mail just to 'mess with me'. He didn't do it on Saturday, when I told him that I was about to declare jihad a la Achmed the dead terrorist, the ventriloquist dummy in the Jeff Dunham comedy routines. We laughed some more. He was appreciative, and we're pretty much on the same wavelength.

Yesterday, I got a Christmas card from him. at the bottom, it said, "P.S. Thanks for making me smile."

Mission accomplished.

Amateur night indeed, Figgy! People who shouldn't be behind the wheel, PLUS checkpoints and traps. For those who are going out tonight, if you're doing any imbibing remember to consider your options. AAA offers their tipsy tow service, and many cab companies offer some kind of special service (discounted or free). Keyword search 'drunk ride new year' and your metro area and hopefully you'll find a couple options. In the bay area I think BART's not doing anything in the way of free or discounted fare (just extended service til 3am), but Muni, SamTrans, and Caltrain offer free service.

In other news, the replacement power cable for my old laptop finally arrived yesterday - huzzah! While it's nowhere near as powerful as my primary machine, there's a lot to be said for portability. Hopefully anyone else out there with stuff in transit gets it soon, I'd seen in the news that UPS went over capacity on the 24th and Fedex on the 26th. Fedex recuperated pretty quickly, but it sounds as if UPS had a big enough overload that everything melted down - taking days just for shipment status updates to show up properly in the computer, and lots and lots of MIA packages. I know the delivery companies have been working tons of overtime around here (I saw a guy delivering stuff in our building last night sometime around 7 or 8pm).

Off I go... I've got some running around to do (and need to restock the bar), and want to get through it as early as possible. Happy default new year's eve!

Hello all! Missed you. Was away at my Mom's for a couple days, with my sisters & brother and their families; it helped to have everybody there. 8)

But, I missed you (((all))).

Yggy, I think the disconnect between the planetary new year (solstice) and the calendar makes me antsy. :? I believe I will feel better tomorrow 8) 8) 8) even though I have to work all day.

Love to you all, with best wishes for a happy new year.

Thanks, yggy!

Well, the very first "time-keeping" was done by the Egyptians. The river Nile was used as the 'time-keeper". Former Librarian of Congress Daniel Boorstein called that kind of use a 'Nilometer', and it was useful for knowing when to plant crops, by the annual rise and fall of the river. Food matters.

Next year at Burningman, I'm thinking about a sundial for a 'watch'.

One of my campmates made a sundial in 2012. Nothing too fancy, just an extension on one of the vertical posts at the corner of one of our shade structures, and he marked the hours by knocking a little tent stake in where the shadow was on the hour. It took him a couple days to get it done because he wasn't always sitting around waiting for the clock to strike, but since he was on our early crew he had it all marked out before the gates opened up. It worked, he and others got a kick out of it, and we all had a great burn.

When we were tearing the camp down, I asked him if his burn was better because of it... and he wasn't sure it actually had helped. It was something he enjoyed doing and figuring out, but knowing what time of day it was didn't really do anything for him. He didn't have to be anywhere at a specific time, so other than being able to give people an idea of what time it was when they asked it didn't do anything for him. Further, he said he only ever felt that magical disconnect with the default world at night - when there wasn't any indication of the time.

On days when there's a shift or some kind of meetup that's on your radar, I can see that it totally makes sense. Other than that, I'm good with generalities like day thirty, morning, etc. To be fair, even back here in defaultia I don't like clocks anymore. I haven't worn a watch since my first burn, and try not to pay much attention to clocks unless I have to (with computer screens and smartphones, it's more often than I'd like).

I'm sure that the marking of time preceded irrigation and agriculture in the valley of the Nile. If you're living the gatherer/hunter lifestyle you know when to look for what kind of fruit ripening and the migration of the various animals and birds you eat.

It does my heart good to know that the city of SF's fireworks are being dialed up by the geniuses who make magic happen on the playa. Those in the bay area, know that the city's Embarcadero fireworks display is bound to be epic. I saw a message from Dave X saying that they had more money this year, so he's got two full barges of fireworks ready to go. Big bam boom!
