Prickly pears are edible, as I understand it. Nopales, if you prefer. And there's always Cactus Candy, or is that FIGJAM's prawn name?

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
They are. There's an outfit in Arizona that sells a prickly pear cactus barbecue sauce and a prickly pear cactus jam. Both are pretty sweet. Nopales are good, Crypto, but the tender early shoots are much preferable, and those are called 'nopalitos tiernos'. Cactus candy is what they make from syrup of the agave. Agave syrup fermented is what they call mescal. Double distill fermented agave and make it in the Mexican state of Jalisco, and you call it the same name as the town.....TEQUILA.theCryptofishist wrote:Prickly pears are edible, as I understand it. *wanders in, makes CCC*
wow, what a day yesterday!
on the good side, my designs worked perfectly, and we got the fence built in half the time estimated. And,we didn't need to use pepper spray!
On the bad side, we (I) were getting harangued by neighbors who now can't use their illegal access and parking/trash dumping.
I had called the police to ask for extra patrols, which never showed up. The neighbors called the police, to have us stopped, who never showed up.
We wrapped up and left, and within an hour, one of the other neighbors, whom I had befriended (not affected by our work) called and said the residents were trying to tear out the fencing, cable and posts.
I called police, knowing if I went up there it'd turn bad, fast.
The LEO called me, asked me to explain the situation, and legalities involved, which I did in detail. He complimented us on "doing out homework" and said he'd admonish the residents regarding vandalism, and potential thereof.
He said he's very familiar with that neighborhood and sympathized with me.
Dang, I know I'll be back to fix something..........

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
yggy.
Dude.
Ever considered Missouri?
Your rock talents would be really appreciated here, and we have some extra-bueautiful coarse-grained granites here for you that have both color and character. Ever hear of Missouri Red? It is THE monument stone, IMHO. Virtually no ferromagnesians, so it takes a high polish and KEEPS it for over a hundred years. Unlike Barre, Vermont. Unlike Elberton, Georgia. Unlike Mount Airy, N.C. Unlike California granite.
We have two yearly regionals.
We have the Chiefs and the Rams.
WE HAVE THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS.....THERE's tradition for you.
We have the BEST barbecue, bar none. (though some from Texas might disagree, you have to consider that they're smoking their BBQ over a 'trash' wood - mesquite. And South Carolinans are perverts - who in their right mind puts MUSTARD in their barbecue sauce, let alone use it as the BASE????!!!!!)
Sorry, I've gone into ranting mode.

No tomatoes? How about sweet red peppers instead?

Thanks Dougly!!
yeah Rhino, I've cut many stones from Missouri Red......it is very nice indeed.
And I gotta go with dry rub, though good sauce is nice.
now, as I recall (maybe AntiM can corroborate) a certain group left Missouri to settle with seagulls at a desert lake...........

I think she's talking about teriyaki sauce, which is NOT barbeque sauce.^Rhino! wrote:PLEASE don't tell me you're adding mustard to pineapple juice and calling it 'barbecue sauce'.AntiM wrote:As someone who cannot have tomatoes, I will defend mustard BBQ to the death.

Pineapple in teriyaki is kind of an islander thing.
It would be fun to add some sort of cactus juice to a hot sauce, just for the fun of it.

Re: The Bar 2014 Edition
I am quite open to fruit based sauces, and sweet or mild chiles. Teriyaki sauce is soy sauce based, with vinegar and a sweetening agent, may be thickened if you're a barbarian. I also like dry rubs, we've been using one made from pepper, mango powder, and finely ground Kona coffee.

You guys *shakes head* gosh it's good to be back. I have been sick as a horse and unable to even sit at my computer. Seems I missed a lot!
Yggy, I hope that if you have to re-do your work at the cemetery that you will at least get paid for it.
^Rhino!, I like your line about the difference between getting old and growing up.
Very apt for me as my birthday is tomorrow; I will be 56 years old and can start my twenty-year countdown to retirement.
Not that I really expect to be here 20 years from now, yikes, in fact I am looking at buying a space in a nice old cemetery here in town. It's a historic cemetery (Congressional) that's been converted to a dog park, to keep it afloat, and yeah you can still be planted there!

I turn 57 in 11 days. I guess I'm already retired. I'll just take cremation, don't really care what's done with my ashes; divvy them up and have a few parties.
