We have been trying to get to Burning Man for three years. The first year, we spent our money on kit - equipment. The second year we built a dome. The third year we were ready to do, but were out of town when the sales of tix opened. We missed it. The tix sold out before we could get online to buy them.

Its not as easy to go to Burning Man as you would assume

Honestly my priorities would have been completely different.

Year one - Go to Burning Man with what I have
Year two - Get more equipment for camp
Year three - Build a dome
Year four - Do something really cool...

But I do have to agree with you that it's not always easy to go. I couldn't get off from work this year & missed it. Getting a ticket is only part of what's required to go HOME.

I plan like I'm going every year but realistically I know that I won't.

Sounds like you guys have learned quite a lesson about assumptions. Good luck making it happen this year, and even if something goes wrong and you miss out on tickets this year don't give up! Ticket exchanges and after-market sales, plus that OMG sale that happens in early August. Those who plan...burn. Again, good luck!

I'm really not sure what you're hinting at. The batches of tickets sell out the day they go on sale (except, possibly, the "holiday" tickets), there are none available to be sent to outside vendors. Hell, in 2011 they had to pull all the remaining stock from the outlets when they saw that tickets were going to sell out. You don't see tickets for any event that sells out being sold from the local head shop as part of the authorized distribution network, you're not going to see Burning Man return to those days any more than we'll see the return of the drive-by shooting range.

Buying tickets at an outlet instead of online was probably better than buying gifts at a mall instead of using Amazon.com, but I'll still take online buying any day.

Not really. With a gift item you don't know what it really looks like, the size, the quality, etc, when you buy online; when you buy a ticket it's just a piece of paper - the event you get access to is the same either way you buy the ticket, and regardless of how you buy that piece of paper you don't know what you're going to get out of the event.

Really. More and more, I find that for many products having direct access to the item for scrutiny at the time of purchase has far less value than online shopping's convenient means of purchase, selection of items, reviews, price comparisons, and ultimately delivery without having to physically visit a store. Not all things, of course, but perhaps even a majority percentage of them.

It's not so much the convenience of the walk-in outlet (which is really only convenient for people who live or work near said outlet or who aren't able to sort out the marvels of modern shopping), but the convenience of a ready supply of tickets that went along with there being enough to have on sale at walk-in outlets. Back then, you had months and months to get off your ass and get the actual ticket.

Now, in order to get tickets, a bit more planning and effort is required. Scarcity's a bitch like that.

It's important that we all buy things in the exact same way. We're burners, after all.

What about a drive by shooting range with nerf guns and tricycles? You can shoot real people.

Actually, the way it works now is that in order to fill out the volunteer questionnaire you need to have a Burner Profile. Once you're logged in, you click on the Participate tab, then fill out the questionnaire from there.

You didn't try very hard.

Thousands of tickets hit ebay, craigslist and tons of facebook related sites for face value resale.

Our plans for going this year are still up in the air, but even if everything falls into place in August, I have zero concerns about being able to get a ticket to go to the event.
