Guide Books

Post by ObscureStar » Wed Jan 08, 2014 9:39 am

Every year we go to the playa, we sit in the traffic for a couple of hours and then we see the greeters and get our guide books and go to set up our camp. Maybe we get around to looking at the guide later.

I wondered if it would be possible to change that order slightly. Yes the event guide and map is a non-zero cost but it'd be pretty cool to have something to do while sitting in gate traffic and know what is happening when and where seems like it'd be a pretty keen thing. Is there any chance guide books could be picked up somewhere before the greeters or perhaps available online a few days before burn? I think it would make them way more useful.

You can always listen to BMIR and the other radio stations set up inside the city. Yes, Gate Radio is mostly "go slow!" and "don't walk to will call!" messages on repeat, but the others present information on events and camps, plus music, weather updates, and mildly amusing interviews.

Or just babble to your ridemates about how excited you. I have been known to do this for about the 2-4 hours it takes on gate road.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

In my truck, tennis balls are used as a field-expedient deterent for this type of behavior.

I'm moving this over to the Q&A board, since that's a better fit for general event preparation questions.

While I don't doubt it would be convenient for you if they set up and staffed a new station along gate road, I don't see that happening. BMIR and Gate Radio are your friends, plus of course you're also free to bring your own stuff to listen to (music, download the art tour audio files, etc) or something to read. Personally, I prefer just enjoying the excited conversations with campmates.

I listen to the Gate station the entire time I'm in line. I find the repetition soothing to my tingly soul fear stomach OH MY GOD I'm here what am I doing?

Also, I believe that the playa events listing is released prior to the event. One could always print that.

Indeed, the stuff available on the web is more comprehensive than the WWW. There are apps for iPhones and Android, too.
