Drought = DUSTAVANSARY?
Drought = DUSTAVANSARY?
California and Nevada are enjoying the driest winter since 1977 and there's no rain on the horizon! There has been a grand total of 0.05in of rain in Gerlach in the last two months. Will this finally be the year where the usual heavy dust predicions come to fruition? I've had ideal conditions every year I've burned but this severe lack of rain seems like the perfect recipe for a good dose of dust. Speak to me oh wise long-time burners, is there usually a correlation between dry winters and dusty burns?

Ooh, another smokey burn gets my vote! Last years sunrises were beautiful thanks to the fires in Yosemite. Wait, I'm rooting for destrutive forces so I can enjoy a more colorful sunrise? Shame on me.

Re: Drought = DUSTAVANSARY?
Last year was also a very good year for drought and up until this year it was the driest year since 1977. But MAY, JUNE, JULY and August brought torrential downpours here in Reno and up on the playa (that thing that happens in July on the playa that no one talks about was a mess).
So maybe we'll get the big summer rains again and that will help...or maybe not.

Re: Drought = DUSTAVANSARY?
Last July here in Fernley, we had one of the best, rainiest, thunderstorm ever. I had to bail out the planter next to the front of the house so water would not get into my crawl space. The roads going north to the playa got hit real hard.

It could make for dustier conditions, though the weather over the next 7ish months will factor just as heavily as the months that have come before. So... maybe.

Re: Drought = DUSTAVANSARY?
It could rain from now until August and little difference would be noted if a powerful front moved through the Gerlach area the week of Burning Man.I hate to pull out the old timer credentials out but participants that have attended since 2008 have been very fortunate in the conditions over this time.You have yet to live through a long and large dust up.It's the wind that counts.It's always the wind.
Be careful. You can spend all your money in there..............................Oriental Visitor

i've heard of instances where if it's dry and dusty enough, the very air itself can burn and explode...

The governor of California has declared a state-wide drought, urging residents to conserve water in what could be the state's driest year on record.
Fifth-generation cattle rancher in California says it has never been this bad ever in his lifetime and his family's records show the area's previous worst drought was in the 1890s.

So, is a Dustansary better or worse than a Dustocolypse?

There is a 20% chance of rain or snow here in Northern Nevada later next week.
We'll see.

So if we go from 10% humidity down to 2% humidity, how much better will a swamp cooler perform?FIGJAM wrote:Haboob?

Oh fer shure: There WILL be dust! But it won't be all that apocalyptic...unless there are also strong winds and afternoon storms.

You share the same last name of our current resident, and loveable curmudgeon Simon de la playa. Are you related or a provocateur?

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.
