Hexayurt advice? My own dimensions?

So, I am going to with a hexayurt and figjam water cooler this year. Our camp is doing 10x10 spaces for each member (we *can* do more space if needed but I want to keep it 10x10)

My biggest thing from last year was that I wanted to be able to stand up more in my shelter (I was in a tent last year. ugh. Never again.)

The thing I wanted to figure out is>> I want to try and do a 9 x 9'ish (less than 10) hex that's at least 5' tall. I've looked at the hex sizes and images and I was wondering how to figure out my own dimensions, IF possible? If not, any other advice would is welcome

Well, a custom sized yurt certainly is possible, but more cutting. Make one to scale in paper or cardboard first.

Do you just need a spot in the middle where you've got clearance for standing up straight, or do you want a room you can walk around in?

On a number of the designs, you can also modify the roof to extend at height over to the door, so with a shorter yurt you get more than just one spot to stand.

Rather than a Hexayurt, also take a look at the four walled structures. They haven't got the same wind shedding ability as a hexayurt, but they are also popular on the playa.

A http://www.appropedia.org/Hexayurt_H13 isn't that much bigger than your 9x9. Or scale it down.

I would fight, and strongly so, anyone who is trying to cast you into a 10x10 space just because it looks good on paper. Yeah, you can do it, but WHY? Its a big playa out there. There is no " land tax" (yet). So why do it?

Hexayurts were specifically designed to maximize interior space and minimize cutting and waste. Leaving anything in the bone pile is just an unforgivable sin IMHO when all that material could be put to good use, and for less effort, in a standard hexayurt configuration.

Think hard about this before you commit to someone elses arbitrary standardization.

There is no 10 x 10 grid on the playa.....

and your plans always get changed because people arrive at different times. hard to put the last person to arrive' car and tent into the back of a camp.

A minimal-cutting H12 or H13 is about 16 feet across the largest dimension, and by the time you stake out your guy-wires, it's easily occupying a 20x20 plot. So...about four times bigger than what is being asked.

The 6' hexayurt is about 8x7 and 6' tall in the center, the 6' stretch is a bit more livable and is 12x7. Cramped in comparison with an H12, but a palace compared to a tent.

I always build the original 6 sided yurt. My son built a 5 sided yurt this past burn and it held up just as well as the 6 sided. The 5 sided is a little smaller but the roof is steeper so more head room...

You can put the door in the long side, as with a regular Six Stretch, or on one of the higher end pieces if you don't want to bend down so far.

DO splurge on the six inch wide bi-filament tape. It's easier to get on, as you don't have to worry about being off a bit when taping the gapped joints and losing strength.

DO make a model of whatever you choose to build, even if it's just folded paper.

In all of the designs, the "Power Band" is very important for strength, particularly in a wind.
So if you go for an extended roof that needs a higher wall panel, please consider extending the tape Powder Band past the Power Band Joint and onto the higher panel. Best would be if it extends all the way across it so the Power Band is maintained for the entire circumference of the yurt. (Power Band shown in green on the diagram)
