I found out about Burning Man festival few years ago. However until now I didn’t manage to participate in it. This year (2014). I would like to change, what I have been putting off for too long, and take part in such a great event. I would like to suggest my own idea to create a construction during this year's event. By sharing my personal story hope to explain what it stands for. It has driven me and motivated me to give it a try getting in touch with you and propose my chosen project. My name is Maciek Gryko and I live in north east Poland, Olsztyn. Exactly 25 years ago when I was 10 years old I became ill. My condition required an extensive surgery, which resulted in falling in coma. Doctors were fighting for my life and managed to save me. However due to period of absence of oxygen delivery to my brain I lost my hearing. Since then I perceived world relying on remaining senses. I have been going through many turbulent times, up and downs. During my lows, each time somewhere deep down I found some burning desire to keep me going. This year I felt accumulation of it and out of it a need to share it with others. A message not to give up, chase your dreams and live your passions. My passions and work is creative art: painting and graphics, designing. I am also passionate about healthy and active lifestyle. I played sport since young age and now I'm part of a Polish basketball deaf team. The idea of my project symbolizes a struggle of a deaf man in world we all live in. Despite invisibility of deafness, often it throws under our feet many hurdles and barriers against normal functioning and day to day living. Having had a real life experience of obstacles and perceived limits by deafness, seeing how many of my fellow friends are affected and entrapped by it and lack of faith and believe they can also succeed, live happy, fulfilling, powerful life. Aim of my project is to show a struggle and fight of a human with own weakness and their illusions. As crazy as it “sounds”, deaf man from other side of the world - Poland, going to US to participate in Burning Man, I want for myself and others give light, in attempt to break those stereotypes, and show them to release those breaks that we often set and stop ourselves with. I want to show and prove that all is needed to make your dreams come true is deep man’s burning desire. We all have weakness, disabilities, but at the same time we also have strengths, talents and unlimited potential if we wish to believe so. This is my attempt to show, prove and make it happen. I have attached a project of my idea for the construction which we created with my friend. As a part of it I want to capture it and document process and journey of creation from start to the end result. Thereafter I want to share it with other people who are deaf or less able, to inspire, motivate them and show them if im-POSSIBLE, it is possible for all of us! At this point, I am not able to specify the size, what materials and how much of it will be needed. I am hoping for an advice from experienced partakers from previous events. I would like to put together group of people, raise funds and make it happen. I wanted to ask Burning Man Team for guidance, what is required to participate and where to start to make this project happen. I would be thankful for any help, suggestions and directions from you.
