Then tried making this out of wire, to gift on necklaces or something. Couldn't quite get the Man's head angular, as it should be. It'll need another attempt.

finally got little man in the boat to work , when water goes down to low it will pull the connection and shut power off to the pump , so it wont burn up

Started stocking up on bags for my vacuum sealer so I can suck and seal all my clothes for the burn.

That's what I don't get about the sealer bags for clothes... great going out, but how do you put the dusty genie back in the bottle? I too have a sealer, but tend to go with ziplocs/giant ziplocs for clothes. Just curious.

I do steaks. Buy in Reno, trim them and then freeze individually in vacuum sealed ziploc system using the enclosed hand pump. Worked great.

I imagine one could rig a hand pump system for larger bags.

For years I have used "stuff bags" for socks, underwear and such..

This year I'm putting cabinets in the van with hand size hole instead of doors. With canvas covering the hand hole..
Small items will be stuffed in the cabinet like face tissue.. And a hamper stuff cabinet..

I have this all drawn up.. Writing this I see where I should make some small compartments for cameras and other small items. Would have to pad the compartments..

I have a 12 volt wet/dry vac.. Its about the size of a coffee can.. Picked it up at Food For Less cheap.. They should be on the net somewhere..

I've used the vacuum seal bags for trips in the past ... basically, you use a vacuum to suck the air out at home, and you either roll them, or sit on them to get the air out when packing to go home. They still compact things, but not as good without the vacuum.

The clothes basically end up filling the space that food filled on the way in. You can squish a lot of the air out, but not as efficiently as the vacuum machine. It all evens out.

It's been a productive week...

1. Purchased Burning Man ticket and car pass - first time out, so I decided to spring for the pre-sale ticket.
2. Paid camp dues.
3. Secured space on shared container truck to transport my stuff from Boston to the playa.
4. Scoured sporting goods and outdoor gear store websites and managed to get a tent, sleeping bag and air mattress for a combined total of about 70% off regular prices.
5. Found heavy-duty stackable storage bins to begin accumulating smaller items - food, toiletries, tools, etc.
6. Confirmed that frequent flier points will cover roundtrip airfare from Boston and a rental SUV for the week.
7. Downloaded 5 or 6 packing lists and began combining into one massive list.

BM is a commitment I made to myself many years ago, and I finally decided to honor that commitment to myself this year. Like Pozer, I decided to jump on a pre-sale ticket to make sure I wouldn't end up watching from the sidelines!

So, I have my ticket and vehicle pass checked off my list.

Recent stuff...

I got the first draft of our camp layout knocked out in Illustrator. The layout's not only required for the placement questionnaire we'll be submitting sometime after the forms open up on the 19th, but is something we use to pre-visualize the camp and get a feel for how things will fit together. It comes in very handy in camp meetings ahead of time, as well as when we're getting stuff unloaded and built out on the playa.

My girlfriend and I have also had a couple meetings with campmates over the last week or so. One of them was with a new member of our camp - he's new to us, but a seasoned playa veteran. The meetups are great opportunities to go over camp plans and brainstorm creative ideas, as well as just spending some quality time with friends.

Hahahahahaha, we used to say, that the first thing you need is to be sure of your ticket. Nowadays we kinda have to take that on trust, most of us anyway, but still, I never relax until I have that nailed down.

This year I'm redoing my personal camping setup completely, so trying to get the pricier items purchased now so that once we are a bit closer I can relax and just put money away for the drive, and for the inevitable last-minute shopping binge at Reno Walmart!!

MV work this weekend. My little semi truck snapped an axle during the Burn and even though I was able to weld it back on and keep it going, want to install a new one. So up on blocks it goes. And I removed the scissors lift that had made it raise up and look out over crowds. It was getting balky in its operation and I wasn't using it too much anyway. New electrical setup is going in to allow for much brighter illuminations to be installed, some other upgrades as well.

I officially booked off the 26th. Originally I was planning to call in sick, but my boss knew I wanted the day off to buy my BM ticket. He was OK with me using a 'mental health' day to do it. Unfortunately someone else in the office found out about the ticket sales and pitched a fit about me using a sick day. This person's been reprimanded for improper leave usage because she abuses the system, so now she tries to police everyone else. So, instead of a sick day, I'm using "Family related" leave ... so... to all you burners... Welcome to the family I can't wait for our "reunion" this summer ...LOL

I'm glad your boss is a nice guy. Mine is too. (I don't think I could take Family Leave, but I can use Annual leave, with proper notice.)

Many offices are not supportive of Burners. To those who are unsure . . . tread carefully! Take whatever leave you've earned for Ticket Day or the Burn itself, but note that not everyone will be impressed by your vacation plans (and a few will be downright antagonistic or difficult).

I'm a canadian federal employee and I get tons of time off each year. 4 weeks vacation, 3 weeks sick leave, 1 week family related and 2 extra days. I also get time off in lieu of pay for any overtime I do. The place where I work is very relaxed. People tend to be fairly artsy, and very accepting. I'm lucky; My boss is great. The only time I've even looked for another job in the last 15 years was when he transferred to another department for a while. I spent the 6 months he was gone applying for other jobs.

I have several pictures of various years of Burning Man up in my office... Basically a bunch of my favorites that I found on line. People always ask about them, and most think it sounds really cool, but think I'm a little crazy for wanting to go. I've had no negative responses from people, and even had one person say they'd like to go with me.
