Playawear Work In Progress 2014

Post by trilobyte » Sat Jan 04, 2014 4:51 am

Branching off from this great thread, tell us about (and show us pics of) that awesome, cool, fun playawear you're working on (if you're working on something fun at home, tell us about that here). Some of us like to live vicariously through other people's adventures, while others are inspired and motivated by seeing what other people are doing. It doesn't need to be a how-to or instructional guide, and it's okay if you don't have pics (though take some next time), show us what you've got!

I have a work in progress to show off today. Started on a quick bustle with this awesome striped silk I found. I need to decide I definitely like where the gathers are and sew them down a little tighter, put a couple of darts in the waistband so it sits a little more neatly, and then trim it up, but so far I have:

I'm in the planning stages of a couple kilts - mainly trying to settle on fabric colors / patterns.

I don't have anything in progress :(

I've been trying to figure out what to do for playa wear, but the problem is, I have no idea what size I'll be by August. I had gastric bypass last spring, and I've lost 110 lbs. I went from a size 6X to 1X since mid March and in all likelihood, I will lose another 40-50 pounds before the burn. I'm worried that whatever I make now, won't fit then. I'm trying to come up with ideas for things that are easily adjusted, or elasticized.

I have an old dress from a theme cruise I went on a few years ago. I kept the dress to use for a Halloween costume after. since I'll never be able to wear it as a dress again, I'm going to use the material for a tutu.

Peyote2004, congratulations on the weight loss! Losing 110lbs must feel incredible! Some ideas for you that you can get started on soon, even while continuing to shrink....
- I brought a magenta silk dressing robe (bridesmaid gift) this year, and it was my go-to morning-chilling outfit. I got tons of compliments, it felt amazing on my dry skin, and the bright color was fun. Amazon has tons like this, maybe buy 1 or 2 sizes down? And they're belted so adjustable.
- Kaftans are fun, comfortable, and loose-fitting, plus they happen to work great with this year's theme.
- It's really easy to make your own tutu, or tutu-like skirt, with tulle and ribbons: http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Non-Sew-Tutu
You can do long, short, add lights, whatever, and I used a long piece of tulle for the waist instead of elastic, so it ties in front.

And don't forget accessories! Scarves, headdresses, arm covers, shoes, socks, jewelry, hats, lights... You can get cracking on that stuff now and wait until the month before to get clothing in your size.

Good luck! It'll be worth it!

So the kilt was a TOTAL disaster. I disassembled it today. Gonna try again next week.
Learned a lot, tho.
When I was a the fabric story, I found some really great remnants. Rich Persian colors. No sequins. :)

I'm putting together some playa armor for my girlfriend and I!
I'm using Wonder Woman armor as inspiration for her outfit, started with the bracers/buckler as practice and it's coming along nicely!

Can't wait to see how she looks in the finished deal!

I'm building myself a kilt as well. I expect it will be the second one I make that I'll wear on the playa. The first will be my practice kilt! Are you trying knife-edge pleats or the simpler box-pleats? I have no illusions about my skill level and am going for the box-pleat. It's lighter anyway.

I like the armor idea :)

On Friday, I'm dropping my sewing machine off at The Sewing Machine Hospital for a cleaning and tune-up. The machine was my mother's, and I received it several years ago, after she passed away. I had never used it before and when I tried it on the weekend, the needle and thread kept gumming up. The only thing I can think of is that whatever she sewed last was sticky, but I can't imagine what it was.

I've decided that I want my tutu to have 2-3 colors. So, this week, I'm going to pick up some tulle (hoping for black & purple or green) to go with the blue from the dress I posted before. Hopefully I can find some dresses at a second hand place that I can tear apart, instead of paying full price for it at a fabric store.

No buckles yet. Just used a black leather belt with it's buckle to hold it up. It still needs buttons and a sporrin, but I want to wait on the buttons until I know what my girth will be in August!

The plan is to cover them with faux fur to diffuse the LEDs. Will post pictures once I got to doing that...
