All kidding aside, this is a record drought year for the region. If Oregon and California don't get another two months of steady precipitation, the playa conditions may be a new experience for everybody this year.

"The worst states for drought are California, Oregon and Nevada, the monitor reported. More than 62% of the state of California is now in "extreme" drought, the state's highest percentage since the Drought Monitor began in Jan. 2000

Extreme drought is the second-worst category of drought.

The entire state of Oregon is now completely in a drought, while the state of Nevada is just under 97%."

About 5 yrs ago I was out on Esplanade at night walking around when suddenly a dirt storm hit. I was w/o goggles or dirt mask, so I jumped under a very large truck (like military large). I knew the owner, so no worries. I hung out there while the storm raged. Another participant asked me if he could jump under the truck. I invited him of course. We sat there for a good 20 mins until it passed. Life went on. Taught me a lesson: don't go anywhere w/o a dirt mask & goggles, no matter how short your trip is expected to be.
