Where can I find this tent?

Post by Eagle Solaris » Sun Feb 16, 2014 4:53 pm

I was reading through some desert camping information on this board and found an image of the tent I am hoping is ideal for Burning Man, and have included it in this post. I could not find where this tent came from, is made by, or a price, so any and all information about it would be very appreciative, thanks.

Also, has anyone ever used the "bucket-pump-tubing swamp cooler" for multiple tents rather than just one and what was the experience like please?

I believe that is known as the Indian Desert Tent. And is ordered from India. Not sure if there's a source here in the US.

Looks like there's been some discussion of it here. viewtopic.php?t=34205&start=30#p560976

The bucket cooler isn't even for one tent. It's for one person, maybe two, sitting directly in front of it.

Hello and welcome to ePlaya - I can appreciate that you may be focused on tent shopping at the moment, but when you get a moment feel free to swing on over to the Greeter's Station and post an introduction thread.

As for tents, there are tons of different tent styles and types out there. For that style, I'd recommend starting to do some internet searching on the term 'bell tent' and see what sorts of things come up. One thing to consider, though, is guy lines. In that pic, there appear to be lots of guy lines that come way out from the sides of the structure. You may want to get some kind of fluorescent marking tape, or consider using solar powered garden lights or something to mark the lines - they can be really easy to trip over at night. Good luck!

Guy lines are your enemy. They waste a ton of space, trip/clothesline your neighbors, and kill hundreds of puppies and kittens each year.

They're great for "mining" areas you don't want people to go into though. Just remember to put up a sign.

Looks to me like a hexayurt with cloth over the exterior and a taught canvas roof cover, or perhaps a more traditional yurt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurt

We had those pool noodles sleeved over the guy lines, solar lights at the base and a string of lights wrapped up the pool noodles. People still clothes lined themselves. Don't underestimate the distractions around you. :D

I had ONE guy line on the back of my monkey hut, (the front was secured differently) I knew it was there. I put it there. It was a big red ratchet strap with lights. I still clothslined myself three times on the damned thing. :D

This could be your camp, hexayurts can't do that. Way cool

Love those yurts. They're a lil pricey though

Thanks for the Info everyone.

I did a regular camping tent under a carport last Burning Man. 3 of us had tents under two Costco Carports hooked together side by side. Which was cool for the combined chill space, but the heat of the sun woke me up every morning. My main goal in my return trip to BM this year logistics wise is to find a more compact tent then carport/plus tent, and one that offers a better seal for using something like a bucket swamp cooler which I did not have this past year. Well aware of the guy-line issues that can be found at BM, but in our camp of nearly 100 people we didn't have one guy-line incident because they have experience in minimizing the potential of bad things happening at BM for several years.

If anyone else has any other ideas for the type of tent I am looking for besides a Bell tent, or knows where the best Bell tents can be found, please let me know, thanks. I don't want a yurt, because I don't want the big flat panels to have to pack, though I know there are cloth yurts, they still seem to take up a lot of the pack space. My buddy and I are travelling in a Pathfinder, so we try to keep things slim in profile and no more than a few feet long.

I introduced myself to plenty of people on the Playa last year and if you want to know me come find me at the Whiskey and Dust camp this year, usually over in the 7:30 and D street zone, just ask for Eagle.

When you say compact, do you want a more compact packing arrangement or a more compact playa footprint.

And how much space do you want? I am particularly fond of my Kodiak Canvas. 10x10, though they do make a 10x14. They are not cheap, but cheaper than an Indian tent or a bell tent.

I wrapped mine in aluminet this year, basically like a giant burrito and probably got a good 2 extra hours of sleep without any additional shade structure. With the heavy canvas, I would imagine it would also hold the cool air from a bucket cooler better than a nylon tent.
