2014 Virgin from Cincinnati

Post by arrow_runner » Thu Jan 02, 2014 8:10 am

I'm planning on coming this year, but I'm by myself at the moment. So is there:

A: Anyone from Ohio/Cinci going that could spare some space?

or

B: Anyway someone could survive if they just came in on a motocycle with a backpack?

Hello! Welcome to ePlaya!

You can do it on a motorcycle but bringing enough water would be difficult unless you have a big Goldwing with a trailer. I saw a guy last year a loaded down KLR camped down the street from me. It looked like he was with a small camp that had brought his water in for him.

Yeah I just have a little Ninja 500r. I need to sit down this weekend and go through the survival guide instead of just skimming it like I've been.

The survival guide and first timers' guide are not exaggerating; take the advice and warnings to heart.

That being said, there isn't much advice particular to motorcycles in the guides, so I imagine this board will be a good resource for you. You can use the word "eplaya" in a Google search to final relevant threads. Once you've read everything you can, feel free to ask questions.

We can be snarky but if you show you're covering the basics, then there's wisdom in these here eplayans. Welcome :D

Simon has done it. Whether you'll get usable information on it is a different matter.

Got it and replied. Looks like this will be your first year too?

After reading over the survival guide and a few packing lists it looks like if I want to just take the motorcycle I'll absolutely have to rely someone to haul the majority of the necessities for me, which just means that I need to make some friends ahead of time and HLP2014 mentioned something about a burn in Kentucky in May which sounds like a great start.

I googled eplaya motorcycle to find the thread about surviving with a motorcycle as transport.

Making friends with locals is indeed about the smartest thing you can do. They're generally going to expect active participation and contribution in their camp in order to agree to do this for you, but I'm sure you know that.

You might also just meet someone with whom you can split a vehicle. A small sedan can fit gear for 1 easily (2 is hard); 2 people do well with anything SUV-sized or larger (Cargo vans, even better).

Welcome to the board. :)

Another thing to consider is that after a week of fun in the sun and debauchery, you'll have to make that LONG ride home on the bike. That will suck.

Well after going through that thread I'm pretty sure taking the bike is not the way to go for me. In fact now I'm doubting bringing my car after reading about how harsh the environment is on vehicles. Sounds like I'm taking the truck. At least I won't have to worry about not having room for things but damn the gas $$$

It really isn't that bad on vehicles, it can be sometimes. I've been driving out from Ohio land, and at most all I've ever done is replace the air filter. Driving back pretty much washes it anyway, and the inside can be taking care of after getting back. The amount of dust inside really depends on how often you'll be going in and out. Of course you can bubble wrap the inside, and do all the other silly things. You won't be the first, nor last. But really if you've been taking care of your vehicle you shouldn't have an issue. Unless a dome crashes into it.

Since it sounds like you're going to being a truck you do have some options that will be easier to transport versus a car. Well that is if you already don't have a bunch of gear. The first would be a hexayurt, which will fit just fine in most truck beds when broken down. Just Google hexayurt for plans, or this link for eplaya results. The second is to build a structure that turns your truck bed into your camping area. Fellow eplayan FIGJIM built himself a kick ass playapod, and is working on another one. You can see his progress on the Work In Progress 2013 thread. Although he's doing it on a trailer. In any case these are just ideas.

Gas wise, the only thing I can tell you is if you don't have a credit/debit card you should get one before you head out. After you get west of the mississippi river it becomes harder to find gas stations staffed 24/7. So you'll have to pay at the pump. But this only happens if you run out of gas between the major stops, and need to go into a small town a few miles off I-70 or I-80. (Mostly on I-80 you'll run into this.)

Savannah is right, it's a good idea to get to know some of the locals. Although I think she forgets most of the Cincinnati kids ended up camping with us last year. lol. I would normally tell you to join the regional email list. But in the case of Ohio, it really isn't worth it. Communication isn't really sent out on the email lists, and we effectively don't have a RC. So I wouldn't waste the time with it. Plus you can get info here, and from the JRS. So it's not that bad of a trade off.

Anything in particular you want to know?
I have a little bit of Savannah with me. Shhh...

I'm relieved to hear it! :)

We've learned that some folks cannot be dissuaded from a crazy plan (and a few of them thrive, regardless) but going to the Burn on a motorcycle would be a challenge best left to a 2nd timer. When you've been once, it's much easier to know what you're getting into.

I did pass the guy cycling to the burn last year. He had some sort of trailer. (this is peddle power, not internal combustion.)

I'm also a 2014 Birgin from Cincy. I plan to attend Scorched Nuts (regional burn) in May, in Ohio to meet fellow Burners. You're welcome to join me there. Check it out at www.scorchednuts.com.

The above post was flagged by another user for looking a little spammy, but it's okay. Scorched Nuts is an official Regional Event, so I'll leave the above post here for the original poster to see. People often post links to regionals in virgin threads. (Any longer post about it can go under "Regional & Events", so that all may find it.)

IQEdge, you're allowed to start your own Introductory thread so people can find out more about you, if you like. :)

Ha, I didn't even know about the Regional & Events section. Good to know. Thanks!
