Newbie, amateur speaker builder

Post by LucidFir » Thu Feb 20, 2014 10:10 pm

Hello Burners,

I am an amateur speaker builder, I like to make stuff out of recycled components that would otherwise go to landfill due to the ignorance of the general public ("it's stopped making sound, it must be broken!").

The silver lining of Western societies being rather wasteful, for whatever set of reasons, is that when it comes to speaker cones; they're plentiful. At least, this is true where I've lived in the UK (Brighton and Bristol).

You can see from the 2 images below the size of the stack of speakers that I managed to collect from friends and the streets, and you can see how I chose to utilise them. It was my first large project (previously making portable 40w suitcases) and it should be readily apparent that this thing hardly exhibits any technical finesse... I'm sure that with the resources available I could have done a lot more, but I was lacking time to properly design.

The wheely bin at the end of this post has 22 speaker cones, is powered by 4x50w car stereo and 2x150w car amp, and runs off of 4x 22ah lead acid batteries; giving it about 8 hours life per charge.

The point of this introduction is that I would be interested in coming out to the USA and helping to build a sound system out of recycled/donated/salvaged components to take to Burning Man, maybe as part of a theme camp?

If anyone is up for spending the next couple of years collecting and storing 'broken' speakers from friends and the roadside, it really doesn't take much effort at all to quickly amass a large stack, and would like a sound system, or if you know of a group that already does this; I'd love to come and help build one.

As I said, I'm an amateur so... don't expect perfection, if there are crews already building recycled sound systems who have actual knowledge of sound design and I could come and learn from them, I'd love to do so.

So, that's my introduction. Oh, my name is Eric, I'm living and working in Thailand, planning on travelling India and South America, love all kinds of music, and love to meet open minded people.
