ok, Do Over...

Post by sadie » Fri Feb 21, 2014 10:16 am

Hello All,
I realized that I didn't properly introduce myself before making a few posts, so please forgive my unintentional rude backwardness.
My name is Sadie, I live in west Texas, I am FIFTY (insert high kick here) and I am busily planning my first trip to Burning Man. I am not associated with a theme camp, and am looking forward to putting myself to the test by making the solo run.
I am a mother of 1, and grandmother of 4 (well, #4 will arrive in May), and I happily live alone with my 4 legged best friend, Stella the Wonder Dog.
I work at a very old theatre in downtown Abilene - in the business office by day, and wherever I am needed by night - tech booth, front of house, concessions...anywhere but on stage! I am currently driving all of my co-workers crazy by not being able to shut up about my plans.
My preparation for this trip started about a year ago. I have transformed a former a/c repair cargo van into an adventure mobile and hope to gather more inspiration for further improvements when I see you all on the playa.
I want to say thanks to all of the veterans who have so graciously shared their information, tips and tricks, and encouragement here on the eplaya. Hope to see you all out there. I play well with others, and seldom run with scissors.
So, that's my best attempt at a bio.
*reaches for ibuprofen for high kick recovery*

Wow! Thanks for all the warm fuzzies! I feel at home already.

Congrats Gaminwench on getting out of this area! I will listen for a familiar accent on the playa and give a yeehaw and howdy.

Thanks Elliot.., and yes indeed, I have read the first timer info. I refer back to it often to make sure I have all my ducks lined up.

Off to work on my safety third skills.. :)

Hmmm, accent's long gone (theatre/music training) although I can drop right back into it at will;
and getting out of West Texas was the best thing I ever did.
Do you know about the eplaya MeetnGreet (Wednesday 6-9, Barbie Death Village)? You, TamaraKay, KenDoll and I could get together and do a (redneck)Texan's take on all that is playa, could be a hoot!
This, of course, would only work if I get over my embarrassment of my (reported) behavior at the last MnG I attended; beware Misa's slivovitz!

Howdy from San Antone, Sadie! I am certain you will love Black Rock City.

We drive through West Texas on our way to Burning Man. Its definitely a place you love to hate and hate to love... Texas is a blood borne disease...

I plan to attend the MeetnGreet. I signed up on the volunteer sight a little while ago. Count me in for the Texan Perspective...!! I recall an old HeeHaw skit with 2 guys in overalls watching/reviewing videos of things blowing up and there take was always the same..."that blowed up reel gud"... I imagine there will be ample opportunity to use that phrase on the playa.

WELCOME!! :D

Whats wrong with Texas? I've been through Amarillo once in 2001. W/B I-40. Stopped at the Big Texan for breakfast. What little I saw, I liked it.
Been through DFW several times though and that's worth hating.

There's always the music, which is great IMHO.

Cat, going through West Texas once and living there long term are two entirely different animals.
The people(generalization) are kind and welcoming, but woefully narrow minded and misinformed.
The weather is atrocious.
Organized religion prevails, along with fast food shrines.
It's a long, long, long (flat) way from anywhere.

Anybody remember the Paul Newman movie Hud? It was filmed near Amarillo, if that area counts. Good way to see some of that scenery.

You're right. In 1988 I drove from Wichita Falls to El Paso via Carlsbad NM. That took three days.
Your feelings about Texas mirrors my feelings about California, where I'm originally from. Since the 5th grade, around 1970, I wanted out of that state. Wish came true in 1989.

In West Texas, football is an organized religion.
I was in the marching band,
and in the choir at Jesus church.

(and I worked at the Sonic drive-in, yes, on roller skates)

Elliot ... scenery is an interesting term ...

Very well put, gaminwench. I agree with everything you said.
I was born and raised in the DFW area - and yes Thecatman, it is definately worth hating...too many people in too big of a hurry...I get all white knuckly on the steering wheel when I travel through that area.

hmmm, what keeps me here???
I moved to Abilene about 9 years ago. I took a flying leap through the window of opportunity, and this is as far as I got. Surprisingly, there is a relatively large cultural awareness in this flat, windy, dusty, ugly city. The downtown area has several museums, and quite a few art galleries. The theatre where I work has a lot of history (built in 1930) and is host to many events that focus on art, music, theatre, and dance. Several local foundations pour large amounts of money into the arts, and we all benefit from their generosity.
Housing is very affordable, cost of living is relatively low, there is no state income tax, and now I have grandkids that I want to see grow up! Oh, and no one does BBQ like Texas.!

Of course there are also countless pickup truck driving, beer chugging, gun toting, country music blasting, wife beating, church going, tobacco spitting, abortion clinic protesting, conservative voting rednecks too, but I think they could be found just about anywhere.

The Big Bend area of Texas is IMO the most breathtaking as far as scenery goes. I have camped in Ft. Davis, and in Big Bend National Park a couple of times and it was spectacular. The Hill Country is beautiful, but getting awfully crowded...
