I beg your pardon.

We were once children of the dust, some of us. Now, there are those of us who simply ROCK.

I know I do, anyway, and have the creds to prove it.

I also went on a trip today, in the passenger seat of a minivan full of people. The destination was a building lot that a friend has bought sight unseen.
We never did find the exact lot (he needs to get the GPS coordinates for it), but this is probably moot, since he has clearly bought land so steep it is unusable. But the sum was small.

What we did find, on a small street up in the hill in the back of Lucerne, CA, was this LNT sign. In the spirit of the sign, I picked up a plastic bag in the ditch there. Otherwise the area was pretty clean. This insignificant street truly fits the term "We Are Everywhere"!

Not a bad a.m so far.

The weekend was good, though too short.

Taxes are done. I pay them this week. (yes, I'm one of those folks that actually PAY into the system)

One small project is on hold. No equipment until next week. Looking at foundations for a new generator (Cat 3016 equivalent) and a radio tower. Both will probably be keyed into rock. No equipment means no drilling.

Two more larger projects await equipment as well.

Time to buckle down and check calculations, etc.

Ho hum.

Bored.

drilling is making a hole.. boring in making a finished hole.. As in boring out to(finished) size.. Drill in drilling with a drill bit... Boring is cutting with a cutting tool..

Makes sense. Now, how do you define reaming?

Reaming and riveting thousands of the hole in ICBM super structures was boring..
24/7 12hr. shifts, walking steel in the air... Back in my heavy drinking days..

Reaming .....enlarging the hole from the original size.

Drilling is the process, boring is what you get, reaming is making it bigger.

Backreaming is drawing back a drill bit from the other end of a horizontal boring which is larger than the original bore.
Normally that'd done with horizontal directional drilling, or HDD. HDD is a two-stage process...first you establish the drilling path with a directional drill bit...that's called making the 'pilot' bore. The second stage is backreaming, where you remove the directional drill bit, add a backreamer with an eye swivel behind the backreamer, and as you're backreaming you pull back the utility pipe that you're going to install. Both the pilot bore and backream use copious quantities of drilling fluids, i.e. water and bentonite. The drilling fluids serve a number of purposes - they aid in flushing spoils from the boring, they cool the drill bit, and act as a lubricant for both the bit and the product pipe during backreaming. You have to be careful during backreaming and not outrun the flow of your drilling fluids, otherwise, you get surface heave that will occur. Large borings that outrun their drilling fluids create world-class speed bumps, lift utility vaults out of the ground, or crack curbs and pavements.

Only an equipment cowboy would do crap like that. You know, the ones who sit on a backhoe and spit toacco, wearing a cowboy hat in a wifebeater t-shirt and overalls. As long as I can keep them off the controls of an HDD rig, I'm somewhat happy.

Patsch, the only thing boring is logging the holes. That's why they're called 'boring logs'. lol

unjon, would you rather they CLOSE the intersections?

Add to that, the equipment to do such things is NOT cheap.

These are roads out in the pucker brush, four trucks a day... Some of the ruts are waist deep..

Compared to dig lay and recover three hours.. This should be in the WTF thread..

Busy Monday here, I hope everyone's day is going smoothly. This afternoon is going to be hard to concentrate though, there's 8lbs of pork slow-cooking in the crock pot. I can almost start to smell it now, but in a few more hours it'll be unbearably delicious. Carnitas for dinner...yum!

Good Morning!

Looks like this is where folks I remember hang out. Yeah, been absent a while.
I have discovered the ultimate question to life the universe and everything. "Does it burn?"
