Hey, my name is Dave and im a first time burner this year. The first time i heard about burning man was 12 years ago in ontario when my highschool art teacher ken kelly showed up to ckass one day with slides from his girst burn fir the class. Since then the idea of going has always been a bit of an obsession of mine but for one reason or another couldnt make the trip happen. This year is going to different. The money.is in the bank and the vacation time us booked. Im looking to make this year a big first burn and plan to volunteer with the lamp lighters and the temple. Im currently looking for a small trailer as well becausr i plan on bringing a good sized shade structure and a few tents.

Welcome aboard, and congrats on getting everything all lined up!

This may seem like backwards advice, but I suggest you try not to get over-committed in the volunteering department. Sometimes the stress, or just plain getting acclimated to the high altitude desert environment can wipe you out and make it difficult (if not impossible) to be able to follow through on volunteer commitments. I think you're doing it right, though - walk-up volunteering is a great way to participate on-the-day, and Lamplighters is one of the best ways to do it. Another good walk-up volunteer opportunity is with the post office - they could always use a hand delivering mail, plus it's a great way to discover the city and meet people. The temple is usually finished by the time the gates open, but there's a group called the Temple Guardians that you may want to look into - they're awesome people who keep watch over the structure and the crowds to make sure everyone's okay.

Haha you read my mind. The temple guardians are the group that im interested in and have been in contact with. I really like the idea of walk up volunteering as the altitude and dehydration . I was a glacier guide in banff in 06 and I've had altitude sickness befor and it can really ruin a good week.

awesome, another person that's not going to have to worry about being cold at night on the playa... is it just me or do you snicker when people warn you about it going down to a freezing 45 degrees F at night?

I definitely think 45F would feel like t-shirt weather right now...I don't know what it's like in Winnipeg right now, but we're getting a blizzard with windchill down to -45F! I am from southern CA (this is my fourth ND winter) and god damn am I ready to go back to the desert heat. BURNING MAN WOOO!

yeah, its about the same here today, nothing like going outside and having your eyes feel like they are freezing lol. it went up to 28 f last week and I was in a light shirt lol. I moved from Halifax two years ago and I miss the warm wet winters.

Hey Dave =) I'm Spyder, I'm in Winnipeg as well. This'll be my 5th trek out. Congrats on "breaking the seal", now just try to stop =p. Just a little tip, make sure the trailer is the right size for your vehicle. We killed a decent car the first year. It's not like driving through the prairies =p. Also try to sunscreen before ya hit Nevada. That sun will burn you right through the car windows..(or at least it does to me EVERY YEAR lol). And no, after this f'd up winter we just had, you will not find it very cold on the playa lol. I like to think that Winnipeggers are kind of naturally cut out for this in some weird, survivalist culture sort of way, suiting up to walk to the mailbox =p what wind?

Lol im used to the sun, used to be a truck driver for 4 years, i miss my deep left arm tan

lol. Im only looking for a 4 x 6 utility trailer to haul a few crates, and the pvc for a monkey hut and shower/evap pond. If you hear about a cheap trailer in the area pm me.

Just got a beautiful face palm of a moment when i got my visa bill... Riiiiight, american websites charge american dollars lol my $850 bill for.two.tickets and a vehicle pass just became $971 canadian... Man i miss two years ago when our money.was worth more then yours... Lol
