Hey, it's Thorormr!! Welcome back! Where ya been, you rascal?

Yeah Rhino, the best friend I lost a few years ago, was crew operation manager for his companies directional drilling division......had some great stories of steering that thing under freeways, rivers, all sorts of things.........and hitting and losing the 50K drill head.......cool technology, for sure.

found a nice young couple with a preemee baby for my rental......well, I hope they are as they seem.
But in talking, I see a real frustration, and not sure how to work with it:
These kids are young, but, work hard and all. They don't use credit cards, buy a used car and paid for it, don't charge stuff.........so, have no "credit".
Yeah, so they are penalized for "living withing their means" and being young people.......they said they've been applying for places for months, but, keep running into the "no credit" wall, and can't afford 3 months advanced rent (some of the landlords required that in order to rent).
Crimeny! how are young people, who are (seem anyway) responsible and trying hard, but don't come from "money", supposed to get "started"?.

Ygmir, first off condolences on the lost of your best friend. He's still alive, though, and living within you. Thanks for sharing him.

Most folks don't realize that though the machine doing the drilling costs $50K or more, the downhole investment of pipes, locator beacon, and drill bit may cost just as much. There's a certain level of risk involved every time you put half of your investment downhole.

The drill pipes, also called rods, are flexible. If you push the rods past the yield strength of the steel in pilot bore or pullback, you're asking for rods to break, and lose the investment. Some directional drillers actually replace their rods on a regular basis so stuff like that doesn't happen. No matter what, you spend a little time inspecting the rods looking for signs of stress every time you go in and out of a hole. Prevention goes a long way towards protecting your investment. But you knew that already, being a BRC resident.

The rigs are amazing. They come in all sizes, ranging from the small ones for the FTTH (Fiber To The House) connections that can fit through a 3-foot garden gate opening to the super-heavy rigs that they use for river crossings. The little rigs have 2000 to 5000 pounds of thrust, while the big ones have up to (drum roll, please) two million pounds of thrust. There's actually a new method out now that Herrenknecht came up with that actually has extended the range the mega-rigs can push. Called "Direct Pipe', it actually uses an entire microtunneling machine as the drill bit. I first got word of this method in China, where a manufacturer's rep from Australia came up and did a presentation on it. I sat totally enthralled, when I realized that with such a method, there's no theoretical upper limit to how far this thing can go. I talked to the rep, and I postulated with him that the rig had a capability of over two miles. They went that far on their FIRST boring 'down under", he said. Examining the data, I revised my estimate to over ten miles. Absolutely mind-boggling for what this combination is capable of. And that's installing pipe that has a 36" outer diameter!

Hey Thoromir, nice to see you - how've you been?

Yeah, that sounds like a tricky situation, Ygmir. Not using credit could be a choice, or it could be the result of having done it badly or something. With a new baby though, it sounds like they're looking for and in need of a fresh start. I think you'd need to maybe play dad a little, keep an eye on them, look for signs of trouble and maybe offer additional encouragement and support so that if they hit a rough spot (with jobs/responsibilities) they power through it and don't fall apart or leave you hanging.

I think we're finally due for some serious rain. It won't quench the area's thirst by a long-shot, but every little bit helps.

yeah the coming rain..........hahaa perfect timing!!! I'll be out, all night, working Perimeter for the Burnal Equinox up here in Grass Valley. I'd not wish it away.......it would be wonderful had it delayed 5 days............
and I don't think the kids were forced into not using credit, they strike me as independent, and trying to establish themselves as such. Young, yes, and naive, I'd say. but, well, they seem to need a break.

Single credit card, low limit, pay off entirely every month. Perhaps just use it for some monthly bills or payments and freeze the damn thing in a block of ice.

Build credit while still living within your means.

yes, of course.......I don't think that's the point, though.
Some people, don't want to use credit.
I have no loans. I have one credit card for online purchasing and such, and for extra guarantees and such.
but otherwise, if I can't pay cash, I don't buy it.....so understand.

Well, Frostburn was last week. . .
Image
Left in a foot of snow and it was 45mph or so most of the way there. It was a rough drive and very glad I was when I pulled into site.

Oh, and the day I left was also
Image

But a long story short, I've been out doing stuff. Tonight I'm about to head out and hang with a Brother for our birthday, I always gift him a pumpkin pie and a bottle of scotch. Baked the pie last night and finally got my camp stuff stowed. I'm down to one truck again, the little toyota didn't pass inspection because the frame finally rotted, so I'm in a world of FUCK and scramble to either sister the frame or cut my losses and get another cheap to feed vehicle.

There's been some painting too.

Image

I just clamped this one back in the easel
Image

And in other news I've compressed my living space down to 350sqft. I'm liking it, but things feel cluttered again.

I've been, I've been. :-)

Credit is a sticky thing. Finally got wise a couple years back when the fiance pulled the plug two weeks before the wedding. I'm still paying on them, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. I went to a debt management firm, and as of now I only need to keep plugging along for another seventeen months and everything will be paid off. Worst case I cash out my 401K and they'll go poof, but it won't leave me with any backup plan.

Hello all!!! 8) 8) 8) Been working too much, which makes me question my priorities :? but it's nice to have the $$$.

Miss you guys too much though. And sorry I missed the Great DIY Event, VC! 8) 8) 8) You will soon be too cool for school, better watch out! 8)

Thorormr, welcome back, always nice to see you here. 8)

Marty, Lucky, you will be happy to know I have installed an electric mattress pad under the NEB  because a warm butt always feels great. Lucky, take my professional word here, heat under and ice over the knee is what you want. At the same time. 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, don't electrocute yourself. You can rent a fancy machine with the heat and cold and continuous passive motion for a mere $1500 per day, but, DIY works just as well.

Yggy I want so bad to see your work. Elorrum, hang in there, spring is coming and we will go ask the redwoods what you should do next! 8)

((((AntiM))))

Trilo, I am still grateful for your support to all on Directed Ticket Sale Day, gosh, I hope tomorrow is better!!!

Not a lot going on here. Did get to see Larry's son when he came out to Park City, went on a tour of a brewery with him. They gave us full glasses of beer, not sample glasses... and repeatedly. I don't like beer, but right out of the vat? Boy Howdy, that's good!

Good luck to everyone. Make sure you're on the fastest internet connection you can get to, and get in there as soon as you can. You may see some busy server messages at the very onset, but wait a few seconds and refresh - once you get into the waiting room it's time to take deep breaths and have patience.

Tickets sold through in just over 6 hours last year, and that was with InTicketing and all the technical hurdles they ran into. Ticketfly (also a burner-owned independent business, btw) has much greater capacity and will hopefully face few to no hurdles whatsoever. What that all means is that tickets will probably be easier to get, but for a shorter period of time.

Mornin' barpeeps!

I just wanted to give everyone a head's up that I have begun negotiating with the Sands Regency this year's Barbie Death Camp Reno Hotel Deal which will be open to all burners whether or not you're a member of our modest village. I can't quote any prices as of yet; it seems that they're under "new management" (aren't they always?) and the woman I have dealt with in the past has moved on to a better location, like the Mustang Ranch. But if all goes well we should get a price cheaper than what is listed on the internet ($35 weekdays), though we shall see. They, and most everyone else, boosts the prices for Labor Day but again, it should be cheaper than any comparable location in Reno. I'll let everyone know once we have the i's dotted and the t's crossed.
