They understood their purpose, I'm sure Obama is smart enough to figure it out, so the only question is whether or not he'll live up to the honor,,,if police and citizens were unarmed then the only people with weapons would be the criminals, and do we have any doubt that they'd use them as a force for more destruction? ,,, I'd rather the UN make these decisions, but I do believe that sometimes they have to be made.

Since when is the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to incite an agenda or manipulate a nation's leader?

Whether or not he'll live up to the honor??? Isn't that cart before the horse thinking?

Disarming the public is most definitely the agenda of Progressives and the U.N. Don't think for a second an armed citizenry is the goal of anyone in the current administration!

The U.N. cannot decide whether to shit or get off the pottychair!!!

The very invention of the Nobel prize was an attempt to manage public opinion for a man who, up until that point, was one of the biggest merchants of death the world had to offer. And, while I'm sure many of the people who've been awarded the prize have done terrific things to deserve it, there has always been an intensely political aspect to the reasoning behind who should get it... that's why Sartre rejected the award for literature in 1964. So, while the prize money is nice and it's a widely recognized award--you can get it for making a movie about global warming and you can get it for being elected president if they think they can use your popularity/acclaim to further enhance the prize's stature.

So you must be able to give an example when the Nobel committee historically influenced a nation's leader by awarding the prize BEFORE he accomplished anything.

1985 - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
'nouther "mission accomplished."

# 1972 - The prize money for 1972 was allocated to the Main Fund
should have given it to the Dirty fuckin Hippys, but naja.

the trend had been to allocate the Prize money to the general fund during times of major conflict but with the trend of the world and the nature of economic/warfare's interdependance the Idea is far too offensive to US political (hyper)Sensibilities.

How about 1978? They award the Nobel Peace prize to Anwar Sadat (Egypt) and Menachem Begin (Israel) for Sadat's visit to Israel, then in 1979 they signed the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.

If you want to get really argumentative and say that they earned the award just for the visit, and that the Nobel committee was in no way trying to influence them, then the same should be applied to Obama. The award was for "Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons" and they said that, and that he has "created a new climate in international politics." If they want to give him a million+ dollars for that, I'm not going to argue whether or not he's earned the right to wear a medallion for peace engraved with the face of an arms dealer. I'm just gonna chuckle a bit.
