Not beinga whiskey or scotch drinker, like most, leaves me slightly out of loop....maybe ya'll can enlighten me, seriously....

What is the differnece of WHISKEY, SCOTCH, and then
SCOTCH-WHISKEY,
single malt, double malt, etc.... etc.....

I know the differnce (kinda) on taste...as in I can enjoy a nice whiskey shot, but scotch really makes me cringe(unless its cold outside, and I NEED it)

Then theres things like SO-CO' Southern comfort, which is a whiskey liquor...(did have a thing for that when I was younger...)
as well as dramboui...yummm and a couple others like....
Yukon Jack, and Seagrams 7,canadian club....etc....
Please enlighten me...pretty please!

Mmm... pour me onna something. Hows about a Baker's & Prat Manhattan? (3 parts Baker's bourbon, one part Noilly Prat Vermouth, dash of Bitters, and a Cherry, rinsed.)

Wheee! Single malt is not blended - it's all from the same batch, kinda like Makers is to bourbon. Example - the Laphroaig I keep tempting Fishie with is a Single malt Islay Scotch - it's distilled in one distillery (Laphroaig), is bottled from a single barrel (or a least a single run - it's not blended with a different scotch like, say, Cutty Sark is), it's located on Islay island in Scotland. Now, a double malt (or blend) is a combination of different scotches (think Cutty, Chivas Regal, or Ballentine, for example) put together, to take some characteristics from all of them, make the final beverage smoother, etc.

Sounds good - may I have me a dram of something scottish? (Smack smack...)

OK. The thing that gives Scotch its whang is the peat flavor, and the use of Barley as their grain. Irish is pretty much the same whiskey without the peat (and is distilled in Ireland), tho they use other grains. American Bourbon is predominantly corn (ever hear the term Corn Squeezins?), and Rye is, as the ame suggests, made predominantly from Rye.

It's good for what ails ye!

Sweet. Combined with simple syrup and other flavorings. Kinda icky stuff. But when it's cold... and ya don't have the good stuff... I think Yukon Jack is also in that category.)

CC and Segrams and what not are Canadian Whiskies - Blends, using predominantly Rye and Wheat.

The dif in flavors is immense when it comes to a whiskey, and it's the time in what kind of aging device, the grains (and - especially - the water) it's made from (and the blends of certain whiskeys and the way they interact), the amount it's cut from cask strength (the proof it's aged at before it's diluted with water and bottled)... When you hear the term "branch water"... it's water from the same source as the distillery. Not all places offer it, BTW, and it can be 'spensive.

This is really way basic, but kinda gives ya an idea.

The best way is to taste some different kinds and then you can taste and smell and feel the dif.

Hugs from Fridayland...

We should do a whiskey tasting on the 13th. Amazing how fucked up you can get, er, how much nuance you gather when doing that, and how blitzed, er, make that how much fun, you can have, too!

We did that once with Tequila - THERE was a brawl, er, party to remember!

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll add a couple of subtle points to BBSue's Wikipedia post.

Scotch and beer are made with all the same ingredients - barley, water, yeast - except beer also has hops. The malting process involves steeping the grain in local water until it just begins to sprout, then the grain is dried/roasted before getting boiled with the other ingredients. Here is a picture of a malting room. Heat and smoke are precolated through the floor. Different regions of Scotland do different things to the whiskey. The Islay (eye' lah) region in the south uses only peat to dry the grain with, so whiskeys from that region taste particularly smokey. They don't use as much peat in the Highlands, partly because there isn't as much available there, and in some regions don't use any at all or maybe just a chunk of it tossed into the gas flames.

Supposedly 70% of the flavor of the whiskey comes from the barrel. The traditional barrel is an oak barrel used once for aging sherry. Since nobody drinks sherry any more, the barrels aren't easy to come by. So these days you can get bourbon barrel scotch. This works out great because bourbon has to be aged in a brand new oak barrel so there are used ones available. There are actually scotch distilleries that own oak forests in the U.S., make the barrels, lease them to the bourbon makers and then take them over to Scotland for scotch production. As much as half the contents evaporates through the barrel while it's aging, and the bottler waters it back to 70 proof.

Scotch is one of the main reasons I'm not an alcoholic. If I let myself get hooked on alcohol, I won't be able to enjoy good scotch any more. So I pace myself accordingly.
